Weed whacker drives fish crazy?

Has any one observed this behavior? I was out by the office retention pond today watching the grounds crew mow the grass. The guy with the weed whacker was going around the edges of the pond. I watched the fish in the pond (mostly bluegills) just go crazy as he worked his way around. The fish were rising and jumping like crazy.

Probably kicking up some bugs and clippings that were ending up in the pond. Bluegills are pretty smart that way!

That would be my guess as well. They’ve probably learned to equate the weed whacker with food (bugs landing on the water with the grass clippings) the way pond fish do with automated feeders. Good call Betty, we’ll make a panfish prognosticator of you yet

Betty the bluegill prognosticator!

(Also, saw a ton of size 16-ish hoppers here at work today. I need to get some foam flies going bad!)

I’ve observed that behavior a number of times as well. After a while, I also see the bass come in to take advantage of the distracted bluegills.

I take it you haven’t been to Oroville California.

No, but I’ve been here …

And, here …

And here …

among many places. Mayhaps, I chose where I go carefully. Or better yet, chose where I do not go carefully!
