I had hoped to give a fishing report on my drift on the Yakima River near Ellensburg, WA this evening. But, alas, Mother Nature turned against me.
I was all set with my cold weather gear and was ready to head over when Tim from the Worley Bugger Fly Co. called me on my cell phone yesterday afternoon. Steve Worley had asked him to call me and suggest that we postpone the drift. The temperatures were just plain too extreme for fly fishing on the river. The Monday morning temperature was going to be 4 degrees Fahrenheit and they were worried that fishing just was not going to be up to par.
One thing I learned long ago is you never argue with the experts, in this case the guides. So I cancelled the trip and reset it for a date late in the next week. The long term forecast is for cloudy (great hatching weather) and somewhat warmer with the temps at or just below freezing.
Last weekend we finally got a freeze that got the last of the rose blossoms. We at that time of year when dries have to be really big (esp. parachutes) or really small. Bluegill iles have to be fished slowwwwwwwwww. It’s generally too cool, even cold, to wade wet. It’s that time of year when, once again, I try to teach myself to fish nymphs. Soon I might need something more than a windbreaker. Might need to get some sandbags for the bed of my truck.
The guys in the lower tier are still in short sleeves, for the most part, and using popping bugs and thinking that the 'gills won’t be on the beds for another 3-4 months. The guys in the northern tier will have a white Christmas. d:
It’s going to be near zero tonight, with wind about 20 . should be 40 or so by Sat. I think I may be on the bank untill spring even with waders it was to cold last week.
