Wasp

Well I cut this body too thin and wanted to see if I could still tie one that looked OK. I got too much hackle and it’s too long so I cut it some after this pic, but other than that what do you think? I made the eyes and antenna.

Wow!!! That is a great wasp pattern. All you have to do now is add a tiny stinger at the end. Nice job!

I agree…WOW! That’s some really good detailing on that fly…er…wasp!

The only way I could even come close to that, would be to find a dried up critter on the radiator of my car…and then tie THAT to a hook! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d swat the darn thing if someone hung it in my window, Nice job. 8T

that is a wonderful representation. in my neck of the woods i would have to make the abdomen yellow and just put small black stripes on it. will let you know if it works!

Very nice work!

Look again. It has a big a$$ stinger with a barb.:stuck_out_tongue:

Nice job - good lookin fly that one - best wasp I have seen to date m8.

have you formed a written recipe for it Skip? would really like make this one.
Jeanne

It already exist I believe. It is a Rainy’s body and they have it in the package if I remember right. I got these last year and tied one and have not tied one since until this one. Only difference I didn’t buy the bug eyes and antenna and I just made mine.

Anyway all you do is take the round body and cut it in half length wise. Then make the slit for the hook. Clip the corners with scissors and use some small flame to heat the edges and shape the corners. Gel Super Glue light coat on the Black thread wrapped hook and place the body and pinch it on. About 1/3 back from the hook eye make your wraps around the body making the segments and add rubber legs and hackle. Tie that off and finish. Change to yellow thread and tie in the eyes and antenna and finish. That is pretty much it.

If you have any questions just ask,

The fly, I mean wasp, looks really good. The only comment i would have is that the rubber legs look a little thick for the size of the fly. I am sure the fish will not worry about that too much, but since you asked… That fly would do really well for me in the middle of summer on the small streams i fish, as i have just been useing yellow EHC’s. By the looks of it, the fly should sit well in the water, get motion from the hackle and legs, and stay on the surface due to the foam. Nice. What did you make the antenna’s from?

Thanks!

The antenna I made from a piece of antenna material that Spirit River has. I just took a piece of one and used my nail to curve it and then heat to ball up both ends and tied it in.

The antenna I have a long straight and pointed, but I only used about half of one and it was the dull end.

On the legs I noticed that too, but didn’t think I had anything else and that’s a shame because after that I changed my mine and think if I looked there may some here smaller.

Thanks so much for the recipe Skip, I’ll have to use another type of foam though, as Rainy’s is hard to get here in NZ - or so I’ve been told, will have to check that one out.

Jeanne

Sending you a PM about hard to get of find materials.
