Warren P.'S "Art Work"

Got a chance to escape, for a late evening, couple of hours night before last and head for the lake across the street from my house.
WarrenP had sent me, out of the kindness of his heart, a couple more of his “Killer Flies” that are also favorites of his own fishing trips and I was both, “anxious to try them out”, and yet, “being tied so beautifully”, I also feared for their loss!?!
But, when Warren sends you his; “little works of art”,(MY words for his flies, not HIS) he ALSO always includes a very nice letter explaining “rude, scary and extremely painful things, he’ll do to your body if you DON’T fish his creations”!?! Doesn’t leave one, much choice, but to fish them really.

So with the wind coming in off the ocean, just slightly less than a full blown hurricane, and me…using only a 7’-6" 3wt. I worked my way around the lake to a leeward side cove, hoping something with fins would be lying there waiting for a free meal being blown onto the water by the wind.

On my second cast, with Warren’s “Rubber Legged Spider/Popper” which is the best way I can describe the fly, a LM Bass, bent on suicide struck it.
Per, Warren’s instructions, I’d tossed the fly out and “just let it sit” for several minutes. After, that time, he’d said “twitch it,just a bit”, which I did.

"On the “twitch” is when the Bass pictured below, hit the fly!
The bass taking the fly seemed to awaken the rest of the lake and Henry and I fished until near total darkness, taking 20+ fish. Black Crappie, some smaller Bass some MUCH bigger, Bluegills and two completely lost and wayward Yellow Perch.

So, once again, one of WarrneP.'s “Killer flies” and the skill in which he ties them, have proven to be everything he claims they are, on his own waters in Tennessee… way out here, on the “Left Coast”!

“The first bass”.

“Warren’s Great Fly”

Warren, are those some epoxy sequin eyes?

Thank you for the kind words Paul. My main goal was accomplished if you had a great time.

The eyes are nothing more than yellow fabric paint with black fabric paint and then coat the whole thing with Sally Hanson.

That popper is not my creation. If you all will look in the FOTW archives for “Sam’s One Bug” you will see it. The only change I made was to tie the rubber legs on the sides instead of putting them through the foam with a needle. I found that if you put the rubber through the body, the fish would pull them out, so, I tied them on and they last longer. I contributed “Sam’s One Bug” to the FOTW in his honor after his death. He taught me the pattern and he was a great person. I think he will forgive me for tying the legs on rather than doing them the way he showed me.

Paul, I will get you some more tied up so go out and fish it some more and don’t worry about losing it.

Really glad you had a good time.

Warren-
Thanks! …enough said…I miss him terribly!
“son of sam”

You are truly a gentleman in this generation of sportsmen and women! Dad would be proud!

Fly Binder…Glad to see the post and nice Bass!
Dad would have sent the same interesting detailed letter to anyone he gave flies to. I’m sure it had something to do along the lines with his many years in a submarine. The old I’d have to kill ya if I told ya stories! Mind you they were never for sale! Unless you refused to take one of his gifts and suddenly found yourself outnumbered in catches 10 - 1. The price was suddenly Free + $10.00!! Learned my lesson too many times as he tried out his “new creations”. Prime example the notorious “garbage bag nymph” made from GREEN orvis bags!!! Man did he ever smoke me on those things on the bream at Bedford. Can remember too many days when he kicked my butt on his new creations and I said no I 'll be fine. Man…If someone offers you a fly…TAKE IT AND FISH IT! No worse thing can be done than to let it sit and rot on a shelf. If you are going to keep them to stare at, do them justice and have them put into a shadow box to display prominently with the creators name. Otherwise go fish!

Enjoy Warren’s creations. I am always glad to see an improvement!!! Have to try that myself. I can honestly say I don’t think we ever tried just tying them on. I have had so many fish suck the legs off over the years that I created a repair kit of needles, threader and precut rubber legs in a nice slightly used Wapsi material bag. Hmmmm makes you wonder. Thanks Warren!

Thank you “son of Sam”. When you get the time, come fish with me.

Will do! Look forward to it!

I put the legs thru the body with a needle, then I put a drop of Super Glue on one side of the leg and pull it into the body. The legs do last a lot longer that way. Just my two cents. It is a super fine fly and has caught me a lot of fish. John

Bassman…we too have used the super glue but I find that the glue has a tendency over time to cause the legs to become brittle and break off at the foam body.

I have tried tying knots in the legs, Doubling the legs, using shoe goo, flexament, trimming feathers down to the stubs and inserting into the hole along with the legs. But all in all still have the legs come out. The best solutin I have found is to use the smallest diameter needle you can find and use a bobbin threader to place the legs. Tend to stay in longer. I like being able to position my legs longer in the front or shorter back etc…

But all in all I think tby placing them under thread we can apply a pressure to the legs to keep them from slipping. getting them in the right place may be a trick. But Warren has that perfected obviously!

I agree waders with time the glue does cause the legs to get brittle and break. Warren has come up with the perfect solution. You can always depend on Warren to bring forth a great idea. I have use a lot of his advise. John
