Warmer weather in Mississippi

It warmed up a little today and I went out for a couple hours. These are about what the average bass ans gills were today. Not real big but so much fun!

Heck of a lot bigger than the trout I didn’t catch today.

What did you catch them on? I may go warm water fishing tomorrow afternoon.

size 10 purple wooly buggers with black hackle.

I keep forgetting to look for purple chennille. Purple worms were my favorite for years and I have done pretty good with purple prince nymphs.

What I really need is a couple of MS style farm ponds. I went out to a 50 - 100 acre lake today, no strikes, no hits, no errors. At least I didn’t feel bad about forgetting my camera.

Next time you are down here I would love to take you fishing. I have sole access to a 14 acre pond chock full of bream!

Boy, twist my arm like that again. I need to make a stop in metro Jackson. I have a very good friend in Madison where I camp out and need to call on a couple of company, visit my high school football coach and see the girl I have had a crush on since 5th grade.

It was 72 on Friday, and I got out. Still a skim of ice in some spots, but lots of open water. No fish tho. Get this, last week , 69 Thurs., 72 Fri., 70 Sat., 39 today, Freezing drizzile late tonight, snow tomorrow and Tues. 5+ inches by tues pm. Back in the IceBox.

We need to weatherstrip Canada. They told me down in Amarillo nothing between there and Canada but a rusty barb wire fence and it was down most of the time. Several years ago a client had me come look at their MN casino in January. I had to scratch around to find enough clothes, I did okay but it was only 20 deg. below.

Man, I’m jonesin’ so bad to get out and fly fish! Y’all are killing me… I haven’t caught a good sized gill in at least a month. LOVE the pics! Keep 'em coming for us poor saps that won’t have decent fishing for another 2-3 months!
We drilled through 12" thick ice in the middle of a nearly 13,000-acre reservoir on sunday. With the nasty weather rolling through this week, we’ll be out on that ice for a good month yet. I won’t complain a bit about it, because we’ve been filling 5-gallon buckets with crappie. But it sure would be fun to get the 3-wt out again!

Nice to see someone getting warm water fish…we’re getting 12" of snow here tonight!

good stuff!!

Stating up in the low 70’s all week!
played around for about an hour today but should get a good half day thursday and friday. These were typical of the bass and bream today. The bream were all pretty good sized copper nose and the bas were all about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds

Up here in PA we call bream bluegills. That sure is a wide body in the picture. I just love filleting a bunch. I caught some through the ice a few weeks back and I filleted them. Then I mixed some flour, old bay seasoning, garlic powder and pepper in a ziplock bag, through in the fillets like shake and bake, then fried 'em in olive oil and a bit of margerine. My mother just loves them.

We call bluegills, bluegills also, sometimes we call a birddog a pointer, but sometimes we just call him a dog. Pretty much the same thing.

As for the width of the bluegill in the photo, he has small hands, couldn’t palm a basketball until he was 6 years old.

Went out today. The weather is great. We had 75 for the high today. The bream were biting. Most were caught on a #10 wooly bugger in a green sparkle chenille with black hackle. I tried a few of Zacs flies he sent me and had a few on a purple thing. He can tell you what it was.

That’s not a bad string of bluegill for the middle of MS in February. I checked out a lake that was drained and restocked about 3 years ago. I caught a few but they were small, I used a Mykka minnow. I’m about 100 miles north and 800 ft. higher in elevation than Jackson, I am hoping that is the difference.

I think I will float a section of the Hooch tomorrow afternoon and see if I can get a trout or two to bite. They are going to have to run Daytona without me tomorrow.

NICE, Chris! That is one sweet stringer of gills. That purple fly is a simple little minnow pattern. Size 8 Mustad 3366, bead chain eyes, rabbit fur tail, and chenille body. It will catch 'em…
My buddy and I went to a dock this morning and brought home 16 gills. Most on plastics, a few on maggots. Fly fishing time is just around the corner for us!

I grew up fishing ponds around Vicksburg with my Grandma. This thread makes me really miss those days and makes me wish I could go back with a fly rod. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

When they get on their beds you need to try one of these. That’s a great start for the year you had there.

Absolutely Uncle Jesse!
