Warm Water FF Mag.

There use to be a warm water fly fishing mag out there. Now I buy a mag here and there if I see an article that I want. Well if someone was going to get you a subscription for a mag which one do you think is the best overall for us warm water junkies.

Thanks
Jason

For us warm water junkies… unfortunately none. I’m in the same boat as you I brouse all the mags on the rack and if I see an article that might interest me I buy it. The only mag I buy on a regular basis is Fly Tyer since I addapt a lot of the salt water patterns to warm water.

Steve

“Warmwater Fly Fishing” was published by ABENAKI Publishers back in the late 1990s to about 2000.

I think they were 10 years ahead of their time!

Yessir, I concur. Warm water fly fishing is finally coming into it’s own.

Yeah it was great, wish they’d bring it back.

The main reason it was dropper was the number of advertisers that dropped out.
Warmwater fly fishers do not buy equipment, according to the manufacturers at the time.
When you buy a rod, reel or line it is probably listed for trout first, panfish as a side line, and it counted as being used to fish for trout.

I could swear a buddy just gave me a stack of magazines called “Warm Water Fly Fishers”? And I thought the most recent issue was last month!
I’ll have to check that stack again tonight and verify that…

Ah…I believe it is called “Midwest Fly Fishing”.
At any rate, there are trout articles, but also plenty of warmwater articles for fish like smallmouth bass, carp, muskies, etc.

Here’s a link to their website, where there is subscription information:

The only fly fishing magazines I subscribe to are Fly Tyer and Midwest Fly Fishing magazine. I used to get Warm Water Fly Fisher until it went under.

I like Fly Tyer because they usually have warm water pattterns and MWFF magazine has good articles on warm water species.

Rick

Midwest Fly Fishing is my favorite magazine. I also subscribe to Eastern Fly Fishing. They’ve done a pretty good job of featuring places here in the Midwest, and have had some good warm water articles. Whether I’ll renew my subscription to them is still up for debate.

Warm Water Fly Fishing was a great mag. I have a few copies, thanks to ohiotuber, that I pull out and read every once in a while.

Every issue of Fly Tyer I can get my hands on, and other magazines if they have an interesting article in them. I really enjoy Ward Bean’s articles in Fly Tyer!

I would certainly buy a subscription to a warmwater, fly fishing magazine. Since that is no longer possible, I content myself with the magazines that regularly feature warmwater articles and patterns. I also do some trout fishing and saltwater fishing so I’m pretty hard to displease. The only articles that I don’t like are the travel articles about places that I couldn’t ever afford to go even if I saved my salary for the next twenty-eight years. You know the places: Elephant Dung, Tanzania; Pure Water, New Zealand; or Frozen Balls, Tiara Del Fuego. Listed below, in order of preference, are the magazine that I would recommend for the warmwater enthusiast.

  1. Fly Tyer

  2. Fly Fishing and Tying Journal

  3. American Angler

  4. Eastern Fly Fishing (or your regional equivalent of this magazine)

I also subscribe to four or five other fly fishing magazines which occasionally have some great warmwater articles but only occasionally. 8T

In addition to Steve’s reply above, I find a number of patterns in Flyfishing & Tying Journal. Although many are not specifically intended for Smallies and pans, they work very well for them and I also like to “upsize” some of the patterns for warm water. The fish don’t complain!!
