Oh no, you said Walmart. The bashers will be here shortly.
CC and Chewy,
How AWFUL that you’d go someplace like WalMart to get something you want at a reasonable price!
All you are doing is feeding huge coporate greed and depriving a hard working ‘small retailer’ of your hard earned dollars that HE deserves to have…
Shame, shame, shame!!!
No one should buy tinsel or anything else at WalMart that may have some value or use to a fly tyer. Spend ALL that money at your local fly shop or via mail order.
Want to make sure some is left at WalMart for me when I get there…
Thanks for the laugh guys, I needed that.
Buddy
Dollar stores are even cheaper!!!
Buddy, you really got me!!! I thought we were talking seriously hahahahahaha nice one!!!
Regards
CC
never ever pass up the dolor stores you can find bead chains and alot of other things. sometimes you might have to disasemble a bit. but if you keep an open mind
you can find stuff you can use .
Wow,
I was in a Dollar Tree Store today…
They have Holographic Tinsel…500 strands /card/…21 inches long…huge supply
5 colors /card /$1…all the colors would be useful…I had already checked out or I might have bitten but if the truth be known I’ve got plenty anyway…and I may still go back…
I have to believe that all fly shops are owned by wealthy fly fishermen who just want to provide a place for cheap fly tyers to stop by, drink the free coffee, and talk about where the best deals on tying materials are at. Of course, we buy our strike indicators at the fly shop to show our support for them.
I once picked up a whole skien of olive chenille at Joanne Fabrics for one of the local shops for $1.99, and he carded it for $.99 for 15’. Said it was cheaper than buying from HIS supplier. It happens on both sides of the fence.
I buy some things at the local shops just because I feel guilty for getting great deals at other places. Must be my parochial upbringing. LMAO
Joe
You guys can laugh all you want, try going to W Mart and getting good advice. If the shops go out of business and move then we will hear the crying.
Support your shop
Just a regular guy.

Hey CC: What size is that tinsel?
Diane,
It says on the card 18 inch (45.72cm) for the length. I measured the width of one strand at about 1mm or something like 1/16 of an inch. I think the quantity is 500 per card. Brand is Holiday Time.
Thanks, Robert!
Update…was at Wal-Mart today and made it a point to check…
Wal-Mart’s is $1.37…same # of strands as Dollar Tree…narrower than $S…which may be good…but for a flashback the $S would be better…AND I’m pretty sure the holographic quality is better at Wal-Mart…
I’m for supporting local shops…BUT…some things just don’t compute…this stuff at Wal-Mart [which I think is a little better quality]… …would last you …your kids…and probably your grandkids…
and No I didn’t buy any …yet
Phil,
I use cut strips of various gift wrap paper for flashback material so I can get different widths and is the same stuff I use on my Crease Fly bodies. My idea for the thin tinsel was body wrap, ribbing, or wing/tail flash.
Totally agree , Robert
This is a tough one. With Christmas coming all those rolls of mylar ribbon at Wally’s call to me. On the other hand the local shop, which just closed, would have told me about patterns to use it in. On the third hand, some fly applications for craft material wouldn’t be known if a tyer hadn’t browsed the merchandise at Hobby Lobby. Eva foam is too good to be used just for craft projects.
Maybe the fly shop should expand to carry craft materials?
Maybe Hobby Lobby should open a fly section?
 :x
I tie with a wide variety of craft store and found materials. I feel that this opens the doors of the world of fly tying to a wider audience.
Many are intimidated by the prices of fly shops. Using craft materials can make the art of fly tying affordable for 4-H youth, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth and adults.
I find that the $1.39 holographic tinsel from wally world to be a great deal. If it wasn’t for this bulletin board I would not have known about the pearl variety as the first W mart I went to did not have that color in stock.
Ed
Speaking of colors…one card has a whole variety of colors…purple, greens, etc…at our store there weren’t many and they were towards the back of the rack…
Just returned from a ‘shopping trip’ with the boss.
Had to do both WalMart and the local Dollar Store.
Decided to do bit of comparison shopping.
The Walmart ‘$1.37’ carded tinsel is quite a bit ‘thinner’ than the ‘$.99’ stuff at the dollar store (okay, its a ‘99 cents only’ store). About 1/16 at WalMart, maybe double that, or around 1/8, at the 99 cent store.
Nice to have a choice of widths. Both are great values for fly tiers.
Good Luck!
Buddy
That’s weird!
I just bought Wal-Mart tinsel as well, all the varities.
I guess that just shows that all think similarly.
Semper Fi!
