Someone once told me that if you wade into water deeper than your waist you’re standing in water you should be fishing. I still like to have the option of chest high though, for stream crossings and things. Check out the Patagonia Watermasters (used to be the SST). They have a very nice suspender system that not only allows easy conversion to waist high, but also allows you to roll them down but still have the benefits of the suspenders. This is a real plus for me as I’m tall and skinny.

I have the now discontinued Simms guide waist-highs. They are great and I’ve never needed more on my home streams. I also use the Patagonia Deep Wading Jacket, which is cut short, but still provides enough coverage - although I did buy an XXL which is a full 2 inches longer than a large, and I’ve learned to bend at the waist to net a fish in the rain. You are best served by trying the outfit on before buying to see if it would work for you.
