Virtual Fly Swap #1 - Results / Pattern Images / Discussion

The very first Virtual Fly Swap here on FAOL was an interesting experiment. Thanks JC and LF for allowing me to run here. I could have easily re-named it the “Pulling Hen’s Teeth Fly Swap”

I received a few e-mails and PM’s regarding the concept of a virtual swap and I think it is a format which could catch-on. Especially so, since more and more tyers are becoming familiar with digital cameras and internet communications.

The Virtual Fly Swap offers tyers a fast way to share patterns easily. The resulting V-patterns can be saved to disk or printed out to serve as pattern instructions to tie for yourself - much in the same way that traditional swap flies may get displayed on a member’s website for all FAOL members to share.

The huge difference in this new swap format is that the V-Swap fly tyer ties (1) fly and then simply e-mails a picture of it to the swap host. Traditional fly swaps typically have tyers tie a dozen or more flies (copys) and mail them away to wait for months to see the other’s flies. Of course nothing keeps V-Fly Swap particpants from trading “real” flies after the swap.

As Swap Host, I would like to share the results of the “Size #6 Streamer Swap” through the link below. In this thread, I would also like to open up a discussion on the flies in the swap, as well as the general concept of Virtual Fly Swaps. Consider these questions if you will: Would you ever join one? Are they going to become more popular in the near future? Does the Virtual Fly Swap compete with FOTW? I feel that V-Swaps actually may flush-out flies that may become FOTW .

Lastly, I would like to thank the few brave tyers that blazed a fresh trail by joining the first virtual fly swap on FAOL. Hopefully they will comment on thier experience too.

V-Host

and…

Also Please Note: I received more input behind the scenes on the concept of a Virtual Fly Swap. There are obviously lots of folks reading this topic and not a one that is willing to comment in public. Interesting vibe. Obviously, traditional values have been challenged by this Heretical swap format. Very interesting experiment nonetheless.

Rich: The flies in the swap are great.

I must agree the "V FLY " concept is a good way to propogate our addiction to fly tying, and as you say it is a pity one or two more tyers didn’t join in.

Perhaps now they have seen just how painless it is, they may consider submiting their work for the next Swap.

I for one will be happy to participate in any future "V FLY " Swaps. Jax

Ditto to JAX’s reply. I did get two new patterns out of this V-Swap and it was a breeze to do. No running to the post office. This would be a great swap for a beginner because his or her flies will have a chance to be discussed over by the board. I hope if more V-Swaps are run that more people sign up. Plus I had a chance to post this fly so others may be able try this great fly on the Small Mouth Bass. Also works well in a Root Beer color with brown feathers.

Any idea when you might run the next V-swap. It’s a great idea and I would have joined up on the first one If I had known about it before a day before the deadline. I was just too busy in the final hours of it to get anything tied otherwise I would have joined up.

How about you running the next one? I would like to see one every month. If you run it, count me in as a V-Tyer…no matter which pattern or style you direct us in.

Only takes twelve tyers to run this on a once a month basis; sharing the swapmiester duties.

If not, then hopefully someone else will offer to host V-Swap #2

 flymaker2,

I have followed the V swap and really like it. Me being new, I find it very educational and informative. I would love to see these more frequently. Thanks for putting it together.

Thats an idea I’ll definatly consider. I’m way too busy right now in the next few weeks to do it but quite possibly early October will be good. I’ll keep you posted
