The Backstop Caddis , originated by Paul Slaney, is a caddis emerger pattern which is often fished in tandem with a bushy dry fly, or as a sub-surface pattern by itself.

Thread: Benecchi 12/0, tobacco
Veiling: Z-lon, silver
Underwing: CDC, natural
Wing: Deer hair, sparse
Thorax: Squirrel - in split thread

Great, as usual, Hans. Very buggy looking. When you use Z-lon on your flies, do you normally use the “straight” or “crinkled” variety?

Very nice bug. I’m going to have to try that one. Does using a dubbing loop instead of splitting the thread make the thorax too bulky? Thanks.
A dubbing loop can of course be used, but really for three or so turns of the thorax, would not be my recommendation.
