Vicki's Rod

Look what showed up at my house. Vicki’s rod… at least the parts. Tiger’s Eye blank, 7’ 6" 3/4 wt. American Tackle reel seat.

Now I’ve got my work cut out for me.

Hooked another one…welcome to the dark side John.

Should be a sharp looking rod! I like that reel seat!

Yonks

American is making some of the sharpest seats out there right now. Can’t go wrong with the Tiger Eye blank, either.

Between you and Greg “twisting” my arm… LOL!

One of these days I’ll have to figure out how to fish with this stuff I make.

I really liked the looks of that reel seat. Not sure I like the garnet thread with that combination of insert color and the copper metallic trim. But, I got both a light and dark brown thread “just in case.”

Even though that cork was already reamed out for the reel seat - it wasn’t sufficiently round. I’ve got it opened up where the reel seat fits in nicely. Only problem is there’s a fault (a pit, if you will) in the cork that’s really close to the edge. With the reel seat in place no one will ever see it. But, will the epoxy be sufficient to keep it from breaking out of there or splitting? Will a cork sealer help? (And, if so, what’s a good sealer?)

Golden Oak wood filler by Borden, if it’s going to show at all, or big enough to fill. Your epoxy should hold everything in place with no trouble.

Nice pick on blank and components!! Should make up to a real beauty!!

You might be right about the garnet and that seat, but copper and brown should be fine. Then, too, the seat is separated from the wraps by the grip so it might not be an issue at all.

Tell you what. Send that seat to me and order a new one with the rosewood burl for that rod and things will be just fine.

 gasp! You are BAD!! Bad to the bone!! Suggesting he ship that reel seat to you…baaaaaaad. <you’re sending it to me…right??>

Perhaps I should send the reel seat to the highest bidder?? Ummm… one has to recoop expenses somehow, eh? :p:rolleyes:

I don’t think you could have gotten a better blank for your lovely lady. I have used garnet thread on these and it looks good but in this case you are right it will not look quite right. Your pit will be fine once the seat is epoxied in. I have had the cork split and when I epoxied it together you would have never know it. A light brown thread and copper should look excellent on the wraps. I will be checking in every once in awhile to see the progress of the rod. I am sure you will be posting pics or you should your work is excellent.
As far as when will you get to fish the stuff you are building LOL time management my friend. That is that nonexcisting thing you hear people talk about all the time.
