As always great job with the fly and the photograph. That appears to be a loop wing of what?
Jesse,
Thanks. Walt Wiese of Parks Fly Shop in Gardiner, MT. shows the fly in a youtube video. He uses purple stretch material for the body. The wing bud is foam.
His video is very nice. If I remember, I will post a link here.
Here is his video:
Craig Mathews version:

Doug Korn’s (on a bigger piece of iron):
Damn, you must have good eye sight to tie that much detail on a size 18 fly. By the way, it’s a lovely job ![]()
As always a very nice tie. ![]()
Used this:

for this (apologies for the crummy pic):

after a frustrating morning fishing the trico hatch/fall for those stupid trout (I guess we all really know who the stupid one was), it was very satisfying to get a decent one when the PMDs started up.

Scott
And here’s yet another video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9PRYl1GB_s&feature=related
So this begs the question, whose pattern is this originally? Inquiring minds…
Good question - I found it in Craig Mathews/John Juracek’s Fly Patterns of Yellowstone Vol 2, written in 2008; I like Wally and Doug’s versions, too. That video you posted made me a bit woozy - they seemed to have trouble holding focus and that shirt was a poor choice for a background; nice fly.

Scott
The one from Wapsi, I think is more of a foam thorax emerger as opposed to using the foam as a wing bud - although he mentions you could use the foam that way.
I mention Walt Wiese because he showed his purple haze version of the foam loop wing in his video. I think the GENERAL idea of a foam wing bud precedes what Wiese does, it is just that he ties it with a purple spandex stretch material for the abdomen.
Not sure who originated the concept of a foam wing bud.
This is my application to an Adams Style fly for additional float capabilities:

Wally definitely has brought some great ideas to the vise; really like his Clacka Caddis, often preferring it to the Iris Caddis it was based on.

Scott
Nice fishy and well tied fly there Scott… Thanks for the kind words on my Loop Wings…
