Ive seen some materials that glow in the dark and was wondering if anyone has had much success in using them? Are fish really attracted to something glowing ?
I’ve had success with them.
And I would think… That possibly yes they are.
Otherwise there would be NO market for them if fish didn’t like glow in the dark stuff and wouldn’t be caught off of stuff with glow in the dark.
Another thing to think about.
Maybe its just a reflex or curiosity strike when they take a fly that glows in the dark.
Like what is that?? mm tastes funny. oh crap where am I being pulled?
I have a couple of flies that I use the materials on. I like them in muddy/dirty water as they make the flies a little more visible.
Fish see better in the muddy water than we do.

Lately, the big thing in salmon fly materials here in Newfoundland, is material that glows under a black light. apparently, black light is the range of vision that salmon see the best in, so people have been using floss and trhead, specifically, that glows under a blacklight.
I just tied a gurgle pop and tried it in Red foam with black legs and used glow in the dark flashabou to wrap the under body and for the tail on a #6 hook…think it will work? Im a newbie and Im trying it for a swap.
Gurgle pops are very productive.
I’m sure a color variation with ssomething new to show the fish will produce even better.
Check your fishing regs before using it. Glowing lures are illegal in some places.
I have also had really good success using materials that glow under black light conditions. I mostly use them on terrestrial patterns!!

Some people swear by lumo flies, as they are called here in NZ, others just swear at them. A camera flash will charge them up far better than a standard torch (flashlight) as the “glow” is based on the intensity of the light rather than the duration under light (or so I’m told; I don’t use them myself as I don’t night fish that often).

I would like to experiment with some glow in the dark indicators.
don’t forget the glow in the dark thread!!
Coats and Clark (fabric store thread) makes it in many colors, but they all seem to glow the same green…makes a really interesting looking zebra midge…use it for body, or rib your fly with it.
I use Lumies Mainly Doll Flies a lot at night in the Rotorua Lakes with good results.
Strangely enough I have a lot of success at Lake Tarawera in the Full Moon fishing a Yellow Lumi Doll just as you would a Smelt during the day. Works for me and the trout smack them real hard. Great Fun. Jax
Hi Jax,
I’ve been told that lumo Doll flies work well on Tarawera by others as well. The first time my My wife and I fished there we had good luck with oliver wooly buggers just at the change of light. If they had lumo ribbing, this would even be on topic!
