I’m a long time Rio Tippet material user but my new Richardson Chest Box is designed for Umpqua Tippett Spools … any of you use Umpqua and care to offer a comment on it’s performance, or, better yet, compare/contrast it to Rio?
Thanks
I would wind Rio onto empty Umpqua spools with a drill or something before I used Umpqua. Umpqua is brittle, not abrasion resistant and totally dissatisfying to use. If you’re a Rio fan you will not be happy with that switch. What the hell is a Richardson Chest Box and why can’t you just put the Rio spools inside of it? Hopefully Rio will continue to lead the industry despite falling into different hands.
I have never had any problems with Umpqua but on the other hand I have never tried Rio.

I agree with Benjo 100%
AND I will bet you a Richardson Box that Rio, Umpqua, Frog Hair, Orvis, Dai Riki, Seaguar, Climax and every other tippet maker out there will change the size of their spools before long. That’s why I would never buy a brand specific tippet dispenser of any sort. All of the manufacturers eventually change their tippet spool size. In my ?old spool? collection I have at least 5 different sized spools of Orvis Super Strong.
So if I was you, I’d start saving as many of those Umpqua empty spools you can get your hands on and spool them up with the brand of your choice or send your Richardson Box back and have them convert the tippet dispenser into additional fly storage and store your tippet material elsewhere.
But if you do decide to keep the ?Umpqua? dispenser, re-spooling really isn?t such a big deal, I?ve been doing it forever with my homemade dispenser. Even without a drill motor you can re-spool 75 meters or so of tippet by hand in a few minutes.
I agree with the rest I use a 3/8 inch bolt with 2 washers. The only tippet material I buy is the thin end tippet or Grand max for steelhead. I saved the old DAi Riki leader spools and re spool for pennies. You can also buy clear nylon sewing thread in .005 .004 dia which is 6x and 7x for a lot less money.
Hope this helps

I agree with the other posters - you will definitely not be satisfied with the Umpqua tippet or leaders after using Rio tippets. And if you are satisfied with Umpqua, you won’t be when you hook into the first nice fish and lose it when you can really blame the tippet material. The Umpqua tippet material just doesn’t hold up.
