I purchased some buck tails last year from a sponsor, and recently pulled one out of its box, and there is round spots of what looks like mold growing on the skin side of the tail. Should I be concerned about this? I have it quarantined at the moment, but I wonder if I should just pitch it in the trash bin. Anyone dealt with this before? Do I need to treat everything in that box?
Good Morning Ol’blue
You can just put it out to air and dry well. I would wash frist then put in the dryer (when the wife is out). Probably just mold.

blue,
If it were mine I’d take a piece of rag and dip a corner in some bleach cut 50/50 w/water (it can be much more dilute than that even) and wipe down the entire backside of the tail. That WILL killl any mold.
Check to see there’s no meaty crud left before doing this. It needs to be clean.
Then air dry outside for a day or two. But don’t toss them.
Jeremy.
Thanks. Glad to hear they can be salvaged, but I guess I wouldn’t be out too much otherwise. I’ll get them cleaned up and back into use.
Hi Ol Blue
I used to get mold spots all the time when I ordered bucktails from Herter’s. In fact, I thought there was something wrong with the first deer tail I received that didn’t have mold on it. I use to wipe them with vinegar and air dry them in the sun. Be sure to keep the tails out of reach of flies or you could have a whole new bunch of pests to deal with. 8T
Ol’ Blue, bleach will do the trick, but you can dilute it down to a 1:10 solution. Bleach can be some wicked stuff if used full strength.
