Someone asked for the recipe for tying this type of fly.
My photo situation is not the best. I don’t have a tripod set-up, so it is hard to tie the fly and take pictures at the same time.
Hope this might clarify the method though?
- Tie in tail (In this case microfibetts)
- Dub any dubbing to the thorax area
- Form a dubbing loop with your thread at the thorax. simply make a loop of your tying thread around the hook shank and then wrap the thread at the hook shank to close that end of the loop.
- Cut your Zelon in short strips. Since you will be putting this material in the loop and ultimately “spinning” the loop, the short strips should be approximately twice the length as the length you want the “hackle” to be. OR, you can cut it shorter and put the majority of the material on one side of the loop. You have to do it this way when using deer hair or real hackle. If your only hackle is too big for the fly you want to tie, use the loop and put the hackle in the loop and trim the butts as close to the thread loop as you can. You will see what I mean when you try it out.
- Spread the Zelon material in the thread loop. It helps to use a dab of dubbing wax on the thread as it will help hold the material in place and allow you to sort of redistribute the material within the loop.
- I could only put 5 pictures in here. The next step is to use a spinning tool or even just a hackle plier to hold the end of the loop closed, and keep turning in one direction until the loop is spun tightly. As you spin it (in the same direction), that Zelon material will begin to “stick out” just like feather hackle.
I hope this is clear.
Thanks,
Byron
