Tying with trolling wire - questions

I am looking to incorporate some trolling wire in some of my tying patterns. I am going to use it for weedguards as well as to tie some tandem hook designs such as eels. Now, I have seen recommendations for #5 and #7 trolling wire. Having no experience at all with trolling wire, I was wondering if anyone would know if that is the test poundage or the wire gauge or what exactly. A few google searches produced no good answers. Can anyone give me the skinny on trolling wire?

Thanks,

Keith

Ok, found what I was looking for I think. Just in case anyone else was wondering, #5 = 43 lb. test = .014 dia. and #7 = 80 lb. test = .018 dia.

Going with Malin single strand #5 which runs about $13.50 for 1/4 lb. spool, which will give me approx 478 feet.

Would you say that might be a lifetime supply.

I always like to have plenty, so if it works good, I’ll have more than enough to gift my buddies with some to try.

#5 is the easiest to work with.

How about posting some pics of the finished fly? I for one would love to see them.
All the best.
Mike.

There is a “Floating Baitfish” in the archives of FOTW that shows one style weedguard done with single strand SS trolling wire.

Sounds like you’re gonna need a bigger bobbin.
