Tried that at my campsite on the Madison a few years ago; ended up chasing hackle all around the brush when the “breeze” off the Gravelly Range kicked up. Despite that, it was nice to sit out and hear the yellow warblers in the willows (probably talking about the horrible monster that was pulling feathers off their distant cousins’ skins).

My son and a friend often tie in the evenings when fishing in the WINTER!!! Smoke from the campfire led to one pattern name, the “Campsmoke Sculpin” which happens to be a killer fly for midwinter rainbows…
