tying leader on

Buy RIO fly line
RIO has included a welded loop on the front end of the fly line to facilitate changing leaders
Problem solved

thank you for all the repleys, very helpful, but i have another question.

why buy expensive leader and tippet, when regular 2 pound spider wire works just the same?

I understand that they are tapered, and in someways more helpful, but with my experience with them, i dont like having to straighten the line everytime, and i found that spider wire works just as well.

Fishy,
I have thought of it but never tried it. Seems awfully expensive (having to buy a whule line for just short tippets). Have you tried it? If so how did it work out?

Regarding the spider wire question, here are some possible answers – maybe not the answer.

I think spider wire is one of those lines that does not stretch and is therefore considered “sensitive”. When a nylon mono line stretches it “buffers” some of the events happening on the business end of a spining rig. Said another way, the stretching absorbs some of the energy generated by the events at the other end of the line. A line that doesn’t stretch transfers that same energy to the fisherman.

I think spiderwire may be manufactured partly from kevlar – very strong material and does not stretch.

Detecting strikes in fly fishing is mostly visual, so sensitivity isn’t that important. Besides, you’ve got the fly line between yourself and the leader – and that probably cancels out any sensitivity the leader might provide.

Mostly, in fly fishing you want limpness in tippet material and little memory for presentation. Nylon leaders and tippet are manufactured to have those qualities.

For similar reasons, bulk mono might not be as desireable as leader and tippet mono that is manufactured specifically for the fly fisherman.

But, some people like fluorocarbon and it is definitely stiffer than nylon mono.

Mr. Guts,

What is spider wire? I like to try all things but have no idea what spider wire is.

ICW line to leader. There are barbed eyelets you can purchase, even at Wal-Mart, that you simply push into the end of the fly line. You end up with a little metal eye on the end of your fly line, just like the eye of the hook of a fly. You simply tie your leader to it. I am experimenting with knots now…but I have never ever lost or had one of those eyelets come out of the end of my fly line. Then you only need to know one knot. Same knot you tie on the fly with, you tie the leader on the line with.

NOBOBY but me uses this little eyelet as I have asked about it before and got zero comments. It works fine. You could use it for starters while learning all the other stuff. And it will go thru the guides with ease.

There is also a tool at Wal Mart called a Tie Fast, it has instructions for tying leader to line and works quite well.

Good luck and thanks for the thread. I am printing it so I can learn and practice the knots.

Jim

Plain old Jim : I used those small barbed eyelets when I was a kid . They never let me down and I loved them . The line zipped thru the tip easily . I cant find them in any stores haven’t been able get any more for years now . There are some double tapered nylon things that have a hollow in the center you thread the flyline thru one end and the leader thru the other leaving the knot hidden . They seem to work well but pliobond works just as well .
I’m In Canada and our Walmart doesn’t carry the barbed eyelets , but We often go to the States so I will check for them at Wal Mart in Spokane next time I’m there . Thanks for the tip .

sorry for the late replys, i have been busy, so first things first, to snipe, the spider wire im talking about only cost about $15 or so for a spool, it is ment for spinning fishing, but it lasts me a long time, and i dont have the money for the real leaders and tippets, so i choose this instead.

To Plain old jim, spider wire is for spinning fishing, its strong, i cought a 29" bull trout on 4 lbs test, so i like it.

Neddle Knot or Nail/Tube Knot; they are all tension knots and work great, been using them for about 17 years. Needle Knot is a great one as well but it is the second half of the knot(which happens to be the Nail/Tube knot) that holds the structual integrity and also allows for a clean transfer of the kenitic energy in the fly line.

Nail/Tube knot can easily be performed on the river and with no tools while replacing leader. Needle Knot is much cleaner but requires the use of a tool.
