I got really frustrated today when I tried to tie a fly for the first time after geting my glasses yesterday. It got a little better when I remembered to tilt tmy head enough to see through the bifocals. What’s worse is this was a big simple nymph for bluegill fishing that I chose as an easy test fly. I stripped the first one off the hook. The second was better but not good. I’d appreciate any suggestions for shortening the adjustment time. On the bright side, I maybe able to see bugs and my fly on the water again.
Patience. Takes time to adjust to clear vision after having the blur.

i never had any problems tying after cataract surgery in both eyes
my near vision changed so i adapted by using inexpensive ready glasses
I had cataract surgery this past June and have not had any problems. I am using 2.50 readers for close up work.

Thanks guys. My problem is in keeping the fly in focus with the bifocals. The head position required seems very unnatural. I’ll try a pair of reading glasses in the 2.5 power of my bifocals.
I think using single-vision readers will help a lot. I have tried bifocals before and they drive me nuts!
Hope the readers help.

i would try on different power reading glasses. i wear 1.5 for computer work and 3.0 for fly tying
i used to wear lined bifocals. i never could get used to the no line bifocals. my feet looked like they were at my chest
Lower your vise so you don’t have to tilt your head to see through the bottom of your glasses.
Be thankful for small blessings… I was complaining just last week, that I wish I had cataracts, as then I could have the surgery and see better than -13 in one eye and -11 in the other! LOL
I tied with pair of reading glasses yesterday and it went much better. Norm, I have a pair of my brother’s stronger reading glasses here. I’ll give them a try too. Bowfin, I hear you. There was time when my glasses seemed to weigh more than I did. Fortunately I got bigger and plastic lenses came along.
Jim, I had the cataract surgery a year ago, and was amazed at the difference in seeing colors!! I got bifocal sunglasses that made me totally nauseous whenever I wore them. They’re in my dresser drawer! I use the 2.50 readers and love them! I do have a pair by the computer, one by the fly flytying, one where I read the newspaper, and one for reading recipes! It’s fun they’re so cheap! Enjoy your new vision! Just be sure to protect from the sun (again cheap ones)

I’ve had bi-focals for a long time but never used them for tying. I always took my glasses off and leaned in close to the fly. I caught stray beard hairs in the fly a few times but had a great view of what I was doing. Even with the reading glasses I don’t see the fly as well as I used to but it is acceptable. I haven’t tried any real small flies yet, just a size 14 parachute adams and some bigger flies but I can see reasonable detail on small flies pulled from my boxes…
