The Original Foam Stone Revisited
The Original Foam Stone dates to July 1984. It’s HERE on FAOL
Different color, different foam. This is craft shop foam that’s soft and pliable. Some Craft shop foam is much too stiff for this fly.

Wes,
What is the reason for the large “lower thorax”?
Wes,
Cool fly. Looks like you could hang a lead sash weight off the back of that and it would still float.
Regards,
Scott
Very nice looking foam pattern.
duckster…for flotation, much less wide it doesn’t float well and to cover all the mess from tying in the wing and close the sides. that’s the reason for the diaichi 2461 hook, fine wire and wide gap. it’ll float fine with less wide foam strips but looses in the appearance dept. another reason is closed cell foam compresses and looses buoyancy if stretched too much. this fly was originally designed as a steelhead skater in sept./oct. 1984 and worked well. the next summer came the stone fly. i sent a friend in maine a few and it worked for smallies maybe as a dragon fly but who knows for sure. another guy used it on a private lake in montana for trout as a dragon fly and said he caught fish but his reliability is questionable. it’s the only stone fly pattern i used in idaho and montana (henry’s fork, south fork snake river, madison, gallitan, yellowstone).
scott…yes it does.
Cool! I like it!
Beautiful tying, Wes!!!
thanks y’all…sure am havin’ fun!!
Looks like a Bunyan Bug!..Only done with foam:^)))
yep it does look like a bunyon bug. others have said the same. The first foam stone had a wing over the back like a stone with folded wings.
Thanks Wes…one of the reasons I asked was that some time ago I read an article about tying a foam damsel/dragon fly adult and the author said to get the fly to always land right side up the answer was to tie in a lower thorax…your term not his…like you have done. For that reason that’s how I do the damsel, dragon flies…may add it to salmon flies though that has not been an issue with them.
i never tied it any other way but when i changed to the diaichi 2461 hook and did the swept up delta wing it all came together.
Wes, it looks like you sure are having fun!
Wes, for someone who has not tied in a while, you sure have the touch. Nice fly and really nice looking tie.
yep zac i’m havin fun. before i had to stop tyin it was tyin for a fishin trip, tyin an order, tyin for gifts, tyin for fly plates for silent auctions, givin demos, and tying classes. now there’s no pressure, no schedule.
Thanks Marty…that means a lot man. the ribbing is a bit off, hehehe.
Beautiful tie! Looks like you could wear out some fish with that fly.
