Two more lake flies: the Abbey and the F.G. Simpson

These are from Mary Marbury Orvis. In the flies below I used blind-eye hooks, but then I tied 3 F.G. Simpsons on regular eyed hooks and will toss them at smallies this summer. I’m a sucker for red and yellow flies.

The Abbey
Tag: oval gold tinsel
Tail: 3-4 golden pheasant tippets
Body: red floss, rib with oval gold tinsel
Wing: slip of gadwall
Collar: brown hen saddle
Head: red yarn dubbing

F.G. Simpson
Tag: oval gold tinsel
Tail: matched pairs of goose shoulder strips, yellow over red
Body: yellow floss tied thick, rib with oval gold tinsel
Wing: red goose shoulder strip, tied in so the outer edge faces upwards on the wing
Collar: yellow schlappen followed by red schlappen
Head: red yarn dubbing

The F.G. Simpson has been my favorite pattern to tie so far. As I get more proficient in tying this style flies, I hope to put together a tutorial on the techniques needed to tie these patterns.

Alberto

Beautiful flies, as always. Looking forward to your tutorials.
