Twisted furled leader loop

Does anyone know how I can get the twist out of the end loop that connects to the fly line? It is so bad that I can’t pass the leader butt through it.

Dave

Not sure if I understand the question properly. Why would you (how could you) put the leader butt through the loop in the leader. My understanding of loop to loop (if that is what you are doing) connections is pass the loop on the fly line through the loop on the leader. Then pass the tippet of the leader through the loop on the fly line and pull. You should be able to push them apart after. If the loop on the leader is too twisted to get the fly line through then maybe put something like a needle or small nail through the loop twist it straight, slide the fly line through. Onece it is all connected it should be fine (maybe, possibly, perhaps)

By leader butt I mean the short piece of leader material that is nail knotted to the end of my fly line. The pronlem is not getting them apert. Th eproblem is after repeatyed use, the loop on the end of the furled leader has become twisted to the point that I can’t pass the perfection loop through the loop on the end of the furled leader.

Why are you taking the leader off?
Are you using the same fly line for dry and nymphing and then using a different leader for nymphing maybe?

Yes. I also have used the leader on different lines. For some reason I don’t have this problem (twisting) on the loop where I attach the tippet. Only where I attach it to the fly line.

I know exactly what you mean Dave. I’ve had this happen on some, but not all of my furled leaders that I’ve made. I’m afraid the only solution I’ve found is to make a new one. I spend a little extra time now to make sure it is not unnaturally twisted before I put the shorb loop in it. That seems to help. Also, I’ve found it helps to make the loop a bit larger, especially on the butt end of the furled leader.

Nail knot a short perfection loop onto your leader. I havent had this problem on the butt end, but my first furled leader blew out on the tippet end. Pretty cool to see, if it werent for trashing a new leader.

Since furled leaders are so supple compared to most mono leaders, I dont like to use mono to nail knot to them. For me, I use a short length of PowerPro, with a perfection loop tied into the end, nail knotted to the furled leader, then you can use zap-a-gap/KnotSense/etc. on the knot. All in all, the entire loop, length of PowerPro, and nail knot only adds 1-2" to my leader, and doesn’t have any noticeable effect on loops or turnovers.

Works just fine for me, on the tippet-end, I see no reason it shouldnt work on the other.

I take my forceps and insert into the loop and give a bit of stretch and hold, sometimes I will take the wax that I use on the ferrules for the rod and work in with my fingers than stretch. Works for me…

Thanks. I’ll give that a try.

Do not worry if you do not have forceps a pen will work fine as well for loops exspecially the smaller ones
