Trude

What part of the fly pattern makes it a Trude - Or what is a Trude?

Don’t know what makes a trude a trude, but all the patterns that I’ve seen have a white calf tail down wing.

FAOL has the story on the pattern here:

I fish trudes in Rio Grande King, royal and western coachman (peacock).

I never can remember the difference between a rio grande king and a western coachman - they’re both black with white wings - right?

it’s best to not speak of the trude.

the trude will set you free

I don’t know, but many times I have heard and read about patterns with a “trude-style wing”. I do know that a Lime Trude doesn’t look like too many bugs that I’ve seen but it is a very good attractor.

this may be the best thread I’ve read here and that’s the trude.

ain’t dat da trude!

I GUESS…I’LL JUST STICK TO THE TRUDE OF TRUDES.LOL

THE TRUDE OF THE MATTER…
IT CAME FROM THE TRUDE RANCH!!!

you can’t handle the TRUDE!

The man who fears no Trude has nothing to fear from flies.

The "Original Trude was tied as a Wet Fly pattern.

Hook: Wet Fly, Standard or 1 Extra Long, sizes 6,8,10.
Thread: Black.
Body: Red Dubbing.
Wing: Red Spaniel (dog hair).

There is no tail, beard, or collar.

Reminds me of many other items that when they were created, had the element of simplicity, and others had to try and improve on the idea, by making things more complex by adding more features.

Hair-wing Royal Coachman came about by someone (Q.L. Quackenbush) wanting to replace the Mandarin Duck Feather Wing on the “Fan-wing Royal Coachman” with a Hair-wing, to make the fly more durable. Hair wing Royal Coachman or any other Hair-wing pattern that has a tail as part of the pattern is not a “Trude”, same applies to beards, legs, or collars. Call it something else, but in my opinion it is not a “Trude”!

Trude is a Wet Fly patten that has no tail…has no beard or collar…has a hair-wing that does not cause the fly to float on or in the water surface…

Parnelli

PS: Triva…some call the Hair-wing Royal Coachman pattern by other names such as the Royal Wulff (Lee Wulff), while the Hair-wing Royal Coachman, was orginally name the Quack Coachman. Quack Coachman used Impala Tail Hair, for the wing, and it was a “Dry Fly”. So instead of call the “Rio Grande King”, a “Trude”, call it a Rio Grande King Coachman"?

the trude as we know it will never be the same.

Hi fishmagnet,

As I understand it the wing style defines a Trude. It was named after A. S. Trude (rancher in the Island Park area of east Idaho near the Harriman/rail road ranch section of the Henry’s Fork). The first fly was tied as a prank by Carter Harrison in 1901. It was tied with reddish rug yarn, no tail or rib, and a downwing of reddish flank hair from a spaniel. Reference is Trout Country Flies pages 9 & 108 authored by my good friend Bruce Staples from Idaho Falls. Take care & …

Herefishy,

A Rio Grande King has a black body, see the FAOL FOTW link above.

Western Coachman Trude has a peacock body, sometimes called peacock trude:

My wife’s name is Trudy, nickname Trude (or crazy lady, but I’d better not go into that!).
So, the TRUTH of the matter is I named the fly after my wife.
She then declared herself monarch of our abode, and thus was born the…(wait for it!) Royal Trude.
And that’s the trude , the whole trude and nothing but the trude.
