Trip to Henry's Fork and Madison for my son and I

Just returned from our 2 1/2 week fishing trip. Trying a new photo hosting site, so just trying a few test photos. Will post a bunch more if this works.

We had the best time and would be glad to share any info anyone might like. I will provide info on locations and hatches as well as time periods as time permits.

Looks like the trip is treating you both well. ENJOY!

Never hit the salmonfly hatch in that area, but sure looks like fun. Have to get back to that water one day. Thanks for sharing.

I intend to explain things in my post. We spent the first week on the Lower Henry’s Fork where the flies de jour were Caddis and PMD’s. First couple days on Madison also Caddis. Then Salmonflies and Golden Stones.

Byron,

Which photo hosting site did you use?

I got a notification from photobucket saying I needed to upgrade (pay more) if I were going to do “3rd party hosting”…presumably posting to forums/bulletin boards.

Anyone else get that from photobucket??

Oh, yes, everybody’s getting it.

Great photos. Looks like you guys had a blast. Awesome bug pics. I?ll be headed out that way again this September. Looking forward to more of your text & photos.

Yes, photobucket has stopped 3rd party hosting unless you ante up $400 a year. There has been a massive migration to a host of other free photo hosting sites.

New Salmonflies in 3-4 years:

And, a different species:

Stonefly shuck, Mayfly nymph closeup on a seine, and Caddis preparing for their reverse hatch

  1. Me on the middle bridge of The Ranch on the Henry’s Fork
  2. A bit of a rainbow looking away from the river with specks of Tetons in background
  3. Leaving The Ranch and looking back at it when we walked out at sunset

We stayed in one of Kelly Galloup’s Slide Inn cabins for 10 days

Also made the obligatory gators visit to Slattery’s Campfire Lodge. As Bill Devane’s radio add says “best breakfast West of the Mississippi”, and its true

Got broken off by a Brown between the lakes. Very crowded below Campfire Lodge

Slattery taking a btreak from cooking:

Perhaps the most well stocked fly shop I have ever visited. The Beartooth on the Madison in Cameron, Montana

I could spend days in that shop and not see it all

But, when I want hair, I go to the bins of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone.

By the way, Craig Mathews sold to Cam a few years ago

They’re everywhere when they’re on!!

Nature gave them six feet which are like Velcro.

Byron,
Nicely done !

Photobucket changed their policy to requiring a payment of $399.99 a year to provide linking from their site to post on forums, boards etc… Their action has left gaping photos holes all over the net. I deleted all my photos on Photobucket as well as my account and am now using Imgur:

This article provides alternatives…check the comments on this piece too…

I’ll be following in yer’ footsteps in Mid-September…

You don’t mention your pearl shuck x-caddis this year, was the stonefly action so strong you didn’t fish them? I tied a bunch, but haven’t had a chance to try them.

Sorry Herefishy,
I think I mentioned fishing the Lower Henry’s Fork for a week before going to the Madison where we found the Salmonflies.

The UV pearl shucked Caddis worked very well on the Fork!!

Also worked well on the Madison when we first got there and the stones weren’t that prevalent.

Found out last year that Kelly Galloup also includes a little of it mixed with the Zelon as the underwing when tying the improved X Caddis.
