Travel Fly Rod

I’m looking to purchase a travel fly rod for freshwater trout. Any suggestions about a good travel rod?

Just about any 4-piece to 7-piece rod in 4-5wt will fit the bill. I built a 9’-0" 4wt 7-piece that travels well, and can throw small hair bugs for bass when necessary. Cost around $100 to build it. From a purchase standpoint, Cabelas Stowaway series in 5-piece or 7-piece are a good travel rod. If you purchase the combo you’ll save some money. The rods alone with a tube start around $105 for the 5-piece and go up to $165 for the 9’-0" 5wt 7-piece. The 7-piece rods are currently on sale.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Joe, cabellas sells good rods and kits.

Tell us more about yourself, what rods do you have now that you like? How long have you been fishing? How much do you want to spend?

when you say travel is this Harley or Jet?

A little more information and you will get better educated sugestions.

BTW welcome to FAOL, but be warned this site can be addicting

OK, my favorite brand is BMO (build my own). I love my 9'-0" 4wt 7-piece Forecast...

nice work on those rods!!

i tried to stay unbiased on rod manufacturers because not everybody likes the same brands

Redington has a great 6 piece travel rod series called the Wayfarer. They start with a 7 foot 3 weight and go up to a 9 foot 9 weight. They cast well are guaranteed for life. Check them out at:

I own several of the Cabelas ‘Stowaway’ 5pc rods, they are a great casting rod for just a little over a hundred bucks.
They give my $600 Winston rods a run for the money! Plus I don’t worry as much about loosing one if I lend it out or have a boating mis-hap.

The idea of a “travel rod” is that it is mainly used for air travel. I just returned from Oregon where I carried on three, 4-piece rods to cover my different fishing situations, I also carried on all of my flies in a Cabelas travel bag. TSA actually encourages you to have these items as carry-on, and they will fit in the overhead compartment of any aircraft, or will fit under the seat if needed. I’ve made 5 trips by air with my stuff and never had a problem.

Some people like rods of more than 2-3 pieces just for the convenience of not dealing with long tubes. I fish mine regularly and don’t have to think about what I’m going to do if I travel by air and need a travel rod. It’s already handled. I have 4-7 piece rods in 2, 3, 4, 5 &7 wts. Goodness, I just realized there are gaps in there. I better get some blanks on order and take care of that.

Why am I babbling? :?

Joe Valencic …
You have been lucky to be traveling in the good old USA. Just wait till you want to go to a location outside of the country. You will check your bags and then wait the hour and a half or two hours to get through security. When you start to board you could be stopped by a TSA agent who is having a bad day. He can tell you to shove that copy of the TSA rules and go back outside of the security section and check the flies. Of course by now your luggage has been loaded on the plane and you have nothing to put the flies in to check them. Besides looking at another hour and a half to two hour wait till you can try to board again. It is almost certain that you will miss your flight.
I?ve seen it happen.

I have the Orvis Frequent Flyer, 9’ 5wt, 7 piece, and it works fine for a travel rod in a suitcase while on business. Also doubles as a backpack rod as it fits easily in a daypack. For airplanes alone, and 4 piece is easily carried.

This should not represent a problem for me, as I cannot afford to travel internationally by air. Poverty has its merits. I fish Canada, and that’s as exotic & international as it gets for yours truly.
