Chris;
Put me down for the Madson’s Barber Pole size 12

Hi Chris,
Put me down for a #14 Deerfield Special.

Thanks Brian H.

welcome aboard, gentlemen.

i just want to clarify that I dont want soft hackles…only traditional wings, so theres no confusion.

thanks for playing.

Does this pattern meet the rule’s?

List of materials: Deerfield Special

Hook: Any wet fly hook that’s 1X shorter than standard (I’m using a Mustad 3399A hook). Sizes 12 to 18.

Thread: Black, 6/0.

Body: Peacock herl.

Wing: Mallard flank feather.

Hackle: Soft tan, cree, ginger or brown neck hackle, tied wet style. Hen hackle will also work. (This is another place to use up some of that cheap hackle you probably own.)

Chris;
I forgot to mention that the Barber Pole is a wet or dry fly. Is that ok?

fishnfool9–

if you could change the flank fibers to quill segments, its fine. i would prefer patterns have 2 “wing quill segements” for wings, such as a traditional baetis wet, a royal coachman wet, iron wing dun wet…the wings are whats important.

jack hise–

as long as its also a wet fly and meets the wing criteria, thats my only concern.

my reasoning is that i absolutely love tying the quill style wings. its a fun technique to use, and when they come out “just right”, the flies are simply beautiful to look at. theyre alot of fun to fish on a swing, too…

mallard flank and mallard quill slips are not the same material. though there are a number of winged wets featuring mallard flank wings.

mgj

this is an example of the style of wings im talking about. these ones are turkey tail segments.

mallard wings, turkey wings, turkey tails…any sort of primary or secondary feather quills.

Chris;
Change mine to a Leadwing Coachman. It will be more in line with the theme of your swap. I don’t know what size yet, 12 0r 14.
P.S. I tied one first as you know hatred of wings!! I must be getting better cause it’s going in my box!!

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

Cactus

Im in…I’ll come up with a pattern and let you know…Jason

“There’s always room for one more wrap of hackle”

thanks, jack.

welcome aboard feenom.

I will join this swap. My pattern will be the Parmachene Belle. Now far as one of your previous post’s, Flank feathers is a term that has been used for some reason for wings on a Traditional winged wet. When you cut a segment out og the flank feather it’s called a slip. You need a flank feathers that are paired left and rights. Examples of this would be the Grizzly King or the Professor and to go a step further would be the Cobler or Tomah Joe. To me when you use the term traditional winged wet, it means duck or goose quills, Turkey, Guinea Hen, barred Wood Duck, Bronze wood duck or Teal and lastly plain old paired left and right mallard flank. I do not know much about wet flies, but this is my interpretation.

this whole “traditional” thing seems to have caused confusion.

first of all, Andy B, you are the last person that should be saying “i dont know much about wet flies”. ive heard the stories, and seen the flies. im honored to have you in this swap.

secondly, my definition of a traditional wet fly uses primary or secondary feather quill segments for the wings. this doesnt include flank feathers, for my purposes. i do not want to start a debate as to what constitutes “traditional” in terms of the wing style of the wet flies.

i simply wanted to start a swap for feather wing wet flies tied from wing/tail quill segments. thats all guys. im sorry for the confusion.

Fly will have to be determined…But I’m leaning toward a Black Gnat already I just like the look of that fly…but I’m not sure about the wing on the wet version…I’ll do some digging and see what I might have jump out at me…!

Thanks for the invite Chris!

well, since you don’t mind some one trying this style for the first time. i’m going to give it a shot…with the marlboro show coming up i could look for a book or two and see what i come up with.

always willing to learn…

pattern TBD

thanks Don
