Nowindknots huh? That’s quite a boast. However, getting back on track - I think 9" & 10" bluegills on a 2wt rod are just about the most fun you can have out of bed!!! The was I see it “why practice combat fishing on a stocked trout stream when you can have the lake to yourself many times in ww?” Besides if you tie a BG and a trout tail to tail the BG will drag that slimy fish to death! <G>

One of these days, I’m gonna have to try this… I’ve heard Smallies to Trout, Carp to Largemouth Bass, and so forth. The time has come to have a final tug of war.
By the way, my vote is on the carp. I’ve had bass and trout take line, but carp are the only fish I’ve caught that made my drag scream.
Popular eh? So riddle me this:
Why does WWFF get so little attention in the FF magazines?
Why does WWFF get so little attention from FF rod/reel manufacturers?
Why can’t WWFF support their own magazines/websites?
Why is the Southeastern Council of the FFF being split up into a “Florida Council” and a “Gulf Coast Council” by its membership because the Southeastern Council isn’t ‘salty enough’?
I’ll give my response - cause we ain’t where the $$$ is, bruthas.

Jim,
I noticed with interest how the counter started spooling up quite briskly as soon as the forum was set up. Jim and Deanna struck gold with that particular action.
Bassyakker You must be spot-on. There could be no other reason than monetary for this separation and exclusion. Well, I am actually a bit happier for it. We have to work a bit harder to get our data, no slick color mags, but we get good quality and a minimal “poser” coefficient" compared to what our coldwater bretheren have to endure.

For all the above reasons do I hold WWFF on a much higher plane than I ever will trout chasing…
Trout remind me so much of puny mud catfish dinks in their barrel rolling ways, I like Channel cats on the fly though…totally different animal…Trout just don’t appease in their fight ability, As compared to say a Smallie of same size…Totally my Opinion
I’m sure many will not share my point of view!
Now now boys and girls. Lets not get into my fish is better than yours. Speaking as a cold/warm/saltwater fisherman I see all fish have their fun.
If you tied the biggest trout to the biggest 'gill or crappie the trout would not notice the gill trailing behind. Inch for inch that might be another story.
A bass is a nice fighting fish, but if you have seen a rainbow jump at the end of your line over and over, that is beauty in action.
If you want a fight play with trout’s cousin Salmon and you will have a long arial fight that will make your heart stop beating.
Then again if you took Bass’s cousing Striper you might find over 50 lbs of fight on the other end of your line tugging like its neighbor the tugboat.
What good is it lusting for a bass on a cold mountain stream when you can hook into the most beautiful brookie. For that matter what good is it lusting after a beautiful brookie when you are sitting in your boat on a warm water pond with crappie attacking your fly like there is no tomorrow.
Enjoy what you have. I for one will try and do so tonight, seeing if I can find the bass that sn apped my line last weekend like it wasn’t even there.

I suspect that most fish for what is close at hand. I know that for me, trout fishing involves at least a three hour drive one way. That and a non-resident license for OK. So I simply don’t make that trek very often. Folks in upstate NY or ID or CO likely can enjoy a short drive or walk to fine trout fishing.
I have never been bonefishing, I just don’t have what it takes to make that trip.
I confess that I like any kind of fishing that I can do, my time to fish is just that limited.
Wherever you are and however you can, go fishing!

“Enjoy what you have.” VERY GOOD advice. I think that is why ww fly fishing is growing the way it is. No longer do we have to depend on the poser trips during vacation each year to validate us as “fly fishermen”.
RE: Why are wwff’r ignored?..
Do we want a fly shop to arrange a rod display with 7’ & 8’ 3wt rods marked “warm water rods” and a duplicate display across the isle with the same rods marked “cold water rods”? Do we want flybins filled with GRHE’s etc. marked “warm water flies” and another bin filled with…well, you see where I’m going, don’t ya? Do we think warm water fly fishers are so dumb that the mfgrs, shops, etc must have two ad campaigns? Or, can we assume that we’re bright enough to realize what rod we need and that a GRHE will catch BOTH a trout and a bluegill?
Most websites now have warmwater forums and they’re usually fairly active IMO. I think the magazine [Warm Water Fly Fishing] failed simply because of bad management and poor writing. I don’t really think “warm water” had all that much to do with it.
I am a warm water flyfisherman because that is where I live. If I had nothing but cold water streams here I assure you all that I’d be a trout fisherman!!
As for why the FFF is messin’ with the SE council [BassYakker’s post] we need to remember that the FFF has been suffering with Anal Retention Disorder and Head-in-their-a$$ Syndrome for several years now. We may only hope for evential recovery on some level.
Of course the above is just my opinions and you may or may not get different milage!!
I’ll get down off’en my soapbox now…
but let’s all KEEP the warm water board going!!!

No contest. Stripers (rockfish and stripe for you Tn. people)are the Fresh-Water equivalent to bonefish. You will wear yourself out catching these bruisers. Carp are a good second.
Semper Fi!
Beadleech and Robin,
Great points as always. I have saltwater fishing close to me, but I mostly WWFF. You got me wondering why and the only answer is, it is more relaxing and less to clean up afterwards.
Do all the “quotes”…in this forum effect the statistics you folks are pointing out…not that I disagree with your premise…but before I totally accept it you gotta factor all those quotes in…
I’ll admit that I enjoy all the things Jed was talking of, and is the #1 reason I’d not leave PA again.
Warm or cold, It’s all right here and just minutes for either. Never did any saltwater fishing…Prolly never will,My situation will prolly never allow for travel of any great extent…
But that’s kewl cause I’m happy with what’s here.
Never said I thought any fish was “Better” But I do have MY Favorite fish to pursue… Stream Pike and Pickerel are at the top of the list…Smallie’s, Browns, Rainbows and countless others all fall in line somewhere.
But I’d not want to have to define, how so !!!.
Usually the fav fish is whatever takes the fly tied to the end of my leader.
I can be very happy catching Fall fish and Rock bass all day…With all the fishing available close…My choice is more often warm water is what I was trying to convey…
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
Everyone wants to excel in this sport but at the same time we let traditionalists place restrictions on our tactics, methods, and ideas. I can recall our celebration at going over 100 posts, then the first 1,000. Now? Well, I do believe the point has been sufficiently made. Thanks to this board and FAOL’s posting of WWFF I am now down to two subscriptions: Fly Tyer and Midwest Fly Fishing Magazine. I enjoy fishing for trout when the opportunity presents itself, which is about once every four or five years. I had just grown tired of seeing so very little of interest for my type of fishing in the slicks. I grew up WWFFing, and I’ll likely die doing the same. JGW
Phil (ducksterman, not BassYakker),
Only one quote/post per day by Rick. I wouldn’t think that would be a big factor unless other forums don’t get a least one post per day.

This forum has been great as it just makes finding warmwater flyfishing info easier. I remember when we suggested moving this forum up higher on the list to where it now is…that’s when it really “took off”. It used to be way down by the bottom, but (as always) JC & LF were listening to our thoughts & ideas, moved it up, & here we are! It has been, is, & will continue to be a great asset to an already great bulletin board. Personally, I check all the forums daily, & they all have a lot to offer.
We are VERY fortunate!

That syndrome has been renamed it is now refered to as cranial-rectal insertus!
I live in southern Illinois if we want trout we leave. Oh they have some trout ponds they stock. YEA RIGHT I’ve used bait bigger!!!
I started FF because I was tired of everytime I went some where to fish I needed an 18 wheeler to get my gear there and a tugboat and barge to hadle it on the water. At 1 point I had 4 tackle boxes full of lures and about 10 rods $15000 in a boat (it was used).I got outfished consistantly by a friend with a flyrod and this ittybitty box of feathers. He let me have my first real fish on the fly and that was it.
I have since ,years ago, sold the boat, gave away or sold the lures and most of the rods.I don’t exclusivly use a fly but I do use it a lot. When I fish it is for fun and there aint no fun in luging all that gear when a itty bitty box of feathers will do just nicly.
Dennis, with 8 itty bitty boxs of feathers and GROWING!!!
I believe I have most of the old issues of Warmwater Fly Fishing.
I think if it was started to today, it would find a good loyal, and growing reader group.

McManus…You are right about Warmwater Fly Fishing. If it started again, it would have a larger audience. I have the complete set & have also talked to the former publisher, John Likakis, about getting it back. Sadly, it won’t happen. BTW, it was NOT John’s idea to pull the plug. It was a great magazine!

Interesting.
There is no doubt in my mind that there will be another Warmwater Fly Fishing Magazine.
It is just a matter of who does it, and when. Then, if it’s a decent periodical; It will flourish!
