i was wondering if anybody on here makes there own tying tools. if so can you give me the instructions. i made a bodkin the other day in my spare time and it turned out great. i thought the bodkin would be the easiest to start out with.
i made a whip finisher that works good
i cut a pencil in half and cut a slot in one end. then i ripped the saftey part off a saftey pin, to the pointy end real hot and rounded it to a hook shape, and on the blunt end, i also got it hot and bent it to a R shape. (USE PLIERS!!!) Then i fiveminute epoxied it into the slot in the end of the pencil and let cure over nite. Works great and is sturdy too! :o
I have made a bodkin, a whip finisher, a dubbing spinning tool, and a bobbin. The bobkin was easy, the whip finisher construction technique same as above, and in similar fastion, the dubbing spinning tool. I just couldnt see paying $ for something i can make at home for less that 1$. The bobbon on the other hand, I made in a welding class. Yes, it was hard to do with such small materials, but it does work. I use it for lead, as the commercial products are pretty darn nice compared to the one I made.
made my bodkin by shaving down a piece of balsa wood drilled a hole in the one end and glued a piece of wire in the hole. i sharpened the wire to a point and drilled anothe hole on the othe side of the bodkin for a half hitch tool. i stained it and am now currently using it, it works great

Just click on the vise link in the page for the vise building instructions or the direct link below.
wwff;
I bought a cheap ($9.95) vice with soft jaws and used a chain saw file and a flat file to shape the jaws into a midge vice. Works fine from 18’s to 32’s.
you asked for the instructions for the vise that is on the faol website, and http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ there they are. i think this one is cheaper than the one posted above, but does not look as sophisticated.
