In this case you are not buying art, you are buying history. Definitely pricey, still, but who did the tying and the level of his overall contribution to the sport is what the price tag is intended to reflect.

I would not pay that for it or any of the others if I could afford to do so. However, it cannot be replaced and in some minds priceless. It is worth what a buyer will pay for it, no more no less. Someday we will all tie our last fly, I hope shortly after that event one of my friends will open his fly box and see a fly that I tied and gave to him or her and have a brief pleasant thought. Whether they decide to tie it on or to take it home and put it on display somewhere will not matter to me at that time. Hopefully some of Joe Brooks close friends have some of his flies preserved and enjoy remember fishing with him and what a great guy he was and how much fun they had together. I am happy I picked up a copy of his “Trout Fishing” book a couple of years back.
