Tom White

Is anyone familiar with Tom White as a fly caster and casting instructor?

Good,

He’s not in the NW anymore is he?

I actually took a clinic from him years ago.

I bring him up because I am going over some of his video stuff from back then and IMHO it is really, really good stuff and thought I would bring it to folks attention.

To me he and Joan Wulff seem similar in many ways…but I think I prefer his tapes.

I also have looked at Lefty’s from years ago and the style seems different enough it raises some questions for me.

Even though i’m pretty new to fly fishing. I’ve studied pretty hard. What i’ve come to realize is if you have a good feel for what the line is doing. You can use many different ways to cast it.

I have to keep going back to the golf swing. Look at all the different golf swings on the Pro Tour. Many different ways to get the club head on the ball. All the ball cares about is what if feels as it’s hit. It doesn’t care how the club head got there. The fly line is the same thing. All it cares about is what the rod tip is doing at release.

Tom moved from the NW a few years ago, was in Florida for a while. I last hear he was managing a fishing resort in Mexico or Belize. Fine caster and instructor.

He’s got a sample video on his web site; neat!

Jim

I’d be interested in what you think :?:

Do I ever wish I could.

I haven’t seen a lot of you pros cast but I think Tom represents the art of casting as you describe in this weeks column.
The segment in his video where he and his wife are demonstrating the double haul showed a real difference between the two… he was so effortless…and I wouldn’t complain one bit if I could cast like her.

Hmmm…that shoots down Lefty’s "kep your elbow in near your side. In the clip Tom raises his elbow to his shoulder. Seems like a nice guy…Bob

Why do you say that? Is Tom a better caster than Lefty?

Not at all…just like you have said before…dif folks, dif strokes…same result. Rhythm is rhythm…just wish I had it on a constant basis …

I heard recently from a friend who knows him well, that got an email from Tom saying he has been diagnosed with cancer, and seeking treatment for it. Our prayers should be with him.

Dang, what type…where? I’m a survivor myself. Know the roller coaster he is probably on…Bob

All respect due to Lefty but Tom is both a better caster and a better teacher by far. Tom has to be one of the most knowledgeable casting teachers I’ve ever known.

I’d definately recommend his videos.

Tom did tell me that he has changed the way he teaches from some of his older videos. I guess you never quit learning. He was a big help in my studies for my Masters.

Tom had a brain tumor and is undergoing treatment at the VA in Arizona.

Got videos 1 and 2. Sensational man; practical, understandable, attainable instruction.

Jim

Thanks for getting back ,Jim.
I have sent two emails asking about the DVDs but have not heard back. Unfortunately I guess that’s understandable.

I worked with/for Tom 6 years He is truly a Great instructor and one of the smooooothest casters you will ever see. As for his bride(former) She was a Jet girl when Joe was there quaterback. If anyone could give me information on his condition please do so.

Rich

Rich,
A friend of mine told me Tom is doing well & responding to his treatments. That’s all I know, but it sounds promising. Let’s all keep him in our prayers.

I know this is an old thread but I think there is good news about Tom White.

I checked his website today after not doing so for a couple months.
I just lucked into the very day that ,Viola! today of all days Tom had updated the whole website. Dated April 8 2007.

Hi says “I’m back in the Keys”

His site is a little easier to navigate now and he has some new features including paypal.

I cannot say if Tom is doing better or worse but This looks like a good sign.
