I know a lot of flyfishers consider trolling bad voodoo but I am curious to see how many others participate in such a forbidden tactic.
Reading the story about the Allagash Wilderness waterway and all the mentions of trolling smelts got me thinking. It seems like most of my spring salmon fishing in Maine is done by trolling a fly on a sinking line paddling as fast as I can.
I always troll to find fish and then usually stop and cast when I know where they are at, fresh or salt.
So am I banned from this board permanately now for mentioning the “T” word?
Who has time for stress when there are fish to catch.
Nick
I hope not, I do it all the time moving from spot to spot. I find it very effective in warm waters. I’ve caught gills and crappie a bunch of times while trolling a muddler.
I troll to find the fish then anchor and cast . With my son or grandson aboard trolling becomes the only option . If I were to anchor and cast with either one of them casting I would wind up with Pheasant tail nymphs for earings thank god for barbless hooks and safety glasses .
Nick it’s ok as long as your trolling a fly. For years dad and I used those New England streamers for landlock salmon in the First Conn Lakes in New Hampshire. Now that I live in Indiana is trout, smallmouth and pike in our deep lakes. Still tie the double hook streamers and tube flies for pike.
I troll a lot of the time. I have caught the most salmon at any one time by doing this. Brookies the same thing.
During the summer when the water warms I troll late morning for smallies and that is when I catch the big ones.
Just don’t do it here in Maine in the FFO waters that is a no no.
