To sell two classic loomis glx's and reel or not?

Well as some know i have been lake fishing almost exclusively with my st croix legend ultra 5 weight and have put my two classic loomis glx’s in 7’6" 4 weight and my 7’ 3 pc travel 3 weight up.I have also not been using my now discontinued galvan ob-2 reel and spare spool both lined for each rod.As i do not go to the mountains but once or twice a year and never for more than 3 days i have been contemplateing selling these.I have added up what they cost though and came up with over 1600 dollars on both and simply can’t see selling them for even half that.Wife said just let em sit in the corner maybe one day when the 3 year old gets bigger that i might want to get up there more often?

IMHO, the GLX is one of the all-time great fly rods. Its action is nothing like the St Croix’s. The GLXs you have are great for small stream fishing. Are you not planning to fish small streams?

I sold off my two GLX rods this year. The decision was simple. I did not fish them and it was sad to think of them sitting in the closet unused when they could bring joy to someone else. You will never get what they are “worth” - used rods might still have 95% of their life still ahead of them, but normally are worth less than a third of their replacement value.

My wife has been tossing around the same idea / problem.
She fishes most of her rods frequently, although that would be in the 4,5,6 & 7 line wieghts.
She has an original 1088-4 GLX ( 9’ - 8 wt. - 4 pc. ) that has only been fished maybe six days at best, in freshwater.
It seems a shame that it doesn’t get fished by someone who would appreciate it, for what it is. But on the other hand, it would be nice to get some sort of equitable compensation for it.

I have an original 1088-4 GLX ( 9’ - 8 wt. - 4 pc. ) GLX that I built from a blank about 10 years ago when Hook and Hackle was closing them out. I only get to fish it once or twice a year when I get to saltwater, but I still enjoy casting it in the back yard at other times of the year. That rod is such a joy to cast, even compared with newer rods, that I don’t think I will ever give it up. Plus, my brother-in-law is deeply envious of it.

I’m curious to see how much the rods are worth on today’s market. I just can’t see selling a GLX for less than half what I paid for it.

The fr904(7.6") sold new at $540.00,the fr843(7’ 3 pc)sold for $575.00 and you didn’t see that rod much, galvan was $240.00,spare spool $110.00,two rio grand lines at $70.00 ea.I even bought extra rod socks straight from loomis just in case the ones that came with the rod tore.I have used the 4 weight but it still looks new,the 3 weight i have probably used less than 3 times,i knew it was a rare rod and just hated seeing it get broke,i know that sounds dumb and it was made to use but it is like a one of a kind.

Chances are that should you decide to sell those rods you’ll not get what you think they’re worth. The GLX was a great rod.

My only hope would be that someone like me knew what they were and how they fished and also knew that loomis no longer made them.I bought the st croix because as said i fish at the lake for warmwater species(bream, crappie, white bass) and needed the 5 weight for larger flies,i also bought a galvan ob-3(4-5 weight)reel for that rod.I just as we speak ordered a spare spool for the ob-3 since it also is discontinued in case i fall and bend the spool!

To those looking i have now placed them on the for sale section with a pic,was a hard decision but if they don’t sale for the price i won’t be too disappointed,i still have two great rods no longer made that few people have, esp the 3 weight.

Gloomis still sells some GLX Classics as 2 pc rods.

They once made 4 pc GLX Classics and those are the ones that sell for more on Ebay.

I see i have had 107 looks, guess some thought i would sell all for $300.00!Yea they make a few 9’ rods in the original glx but these short light weight ones have not been made in a while. They kept the fr904 in gl2 for a while but i guess no one wanted the entry level rod at that price.

In this case, Aristotle might be shaking his head.

A two rod, 1 reel & spare spool package for $800.00 in September of 2011?
It’s not about your asking price, it’s about finding one person who wants the whole of your offering. I think your going to need to exercise some patience on this one.

The ad hasn’t been up all that long and there’s no telling what others who’ve looked at the ad think.
Personally, if I was serious about selling the rods, reel & spool, I’d split them up and offer them ala carte.

Best of luck, Dave

Problem with that dave is that you will have someone that wants a line,or a spare spool or the reel then you are left with whatever is remaining and not able to use because of what you have sold,i have tried this before on conventional tackle, sold the rod then was stuck with the reel only to badly lose on it on ebay.I had hoped a couple of people would buy them together and get what they wanted. The galvan was chosen because it was for a 3-4 weight rod hence i bought a spare spool so i could simply switch whenever i wanted to change rods.
