You may or may not recall that I recently bought a new Pentax K10D Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera (DSLR). Well, now I have a bit of a dilemma. I had intended to keep my “old”, (It is all of 3 years old.), K110D for Amy or the boy. Turns out neither of them is interested in the camera no matter how much I show them that it has all of the functions of a point and shoot plus those of an entry level professional camera.
I really do not need a second camera. It comes with a lens, rainsleeve, remote control, uv lens filter, microfiber cleaning cloth and small sd memory card. I would prefer not to sell this thing on eBay if I should sell it. If I do sell it I would rather sell it to a fellow fly fisher or someone I know. The money would be nice but I do like the camera.
What would you do? Sell it or keep it? If you do sell it what’s a fair price?
If it were me I would keep the point and shoot for use when you are out fishing. I’m an SLR shooter as well, and while I’d prefer to use my SLR while on the river the mere thought of dropping my Canon EOS into the river is enough to make me sick. IMHO it is easier (financially) to replace point and shoot digicam than a considerably more expensive DSLR (plus the associated glass). When I fish I bring my wife’s point and shoot rather than the DSLR simply for this reason.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for responding. The Pentax K110D is a DSLR with certain automatic exposure settings that are also found on the Optio point and shoot.
You have a great point about the point and shoot cameras. No pun intended. Also, for me, if I am going anywhere near the water with my DSLR it is strictly on the bank only. Like you I do not want to dunk either of them!
If you sell the new one, you are probably in for a pretty big loss on it after having it only a short time. And if anything happens to the other one, it will cost you more to replace it with something like your new one than you can likely get for the new one if you sell it now.
If your wife won’t buy this line of reasoning, well… That’s the best I can do !!
John,
I am not selling the new one. I am considering selling the K110D my old one. Pentax model numbers run the “backwards” like K110, K100, K10, K2000, K200, K20.
Nighthawk, you know and admire me and always agree with everything I say. Therefore, here is your answer. You can do this and if sometime you need to, go ahead and blame me.
Sell the old one and sincerely thank the buyer. Just remember all of what he is really doing for you. Think about the. See? No question. In fact, someday, you may want yet another new camera. Could happen, they just keep getting better and better.
You are right, J.C. I do know, admire and RESPECT you. I do not always agree with you but I disagree with you at my own peril. There is one thing that you and others have taught me well. PAY IT FORWARD. Therefore, I am going to make a decision here.
I am, for my own peace pf mind, going to take the camera to the local camera shop for a general cleaning and tune up. It only has about 2700 shutter activations on it. That is really minimal on one of these. It has never been abused, dropped or soaked but it does have some dust on the focusing screen from changing the lenses. This does not affect or show up on the photos in any way, shape or form as you can tell from these photos taken today:
For my own peace of mind I will have the camera professionally serviced and cleaned. All DSLR cameras get dust contamination to a greater or lesser degree. This will ensure that the CCD sensor is clean as well. All DSLR cameras do get dust on their CCD and eventually require cleaning. I want this camera to be in pristine condition to anyone I may sell it too.
After the camera comes back I will probably make someone a real sweet heart of a deal. It was not all that long ago that we were in recovery from the financial disaster that came from the losing my job and the death of Amy’s poor mother from cancer. I remember how badly I wanted a camera back then but could not afford it. I never forgot a guy from Ohio giving me some very good fly fishing gear too. Now I have some excess and a chance to “pay it forward” so you know what I will do.
To tell the truth, NH, I sell my cameras and move on. I try to give a very good deal, but it is a load off my mind when they go. I am referred to as a “bridge burner.” Nice thing, cleaning it first. I never thought of that. Good on ya.
Well you learn something new every day. I have tunnel vision when it comes to DSLRs so I have a strong tendency to forget that companies other than Canon and Nikon make them. I’m in the process of replacing my 4+ year old Canon Digital Rebel (1st generation DSLR) with a new Canon EOS 50D and my plan is to keep the Digital Rebel around for a little while as a backup body just in case.
That being said JCs point is well made though in my case I’ve pretty well run my current unit into the ground so it would really only be useful to a new shooter or someone wanting a backup to their existing Digital Rebel body (as I’m planning on keeping the lens and new battery recently purchased).
Been through the cancer business. Not fun. Lost my wife 38 days before our 38th year together. I am currently using the Cannon little 530 4x I bought for her. Went to Colorado to sit on a lake and howl at the moon for six months. Saw beaver, geese, elk, lots and lots of deer, little camera just not enough to get a good pic.
Sooooooo I would be very interested in picking up a good Pentax dslr. So hopefully I win the derby…sounds like quite a bit of interest in it.
Truly sorry for your hard times. Just remember it is just a bump in the road. A tough bump, I can swear to that. But 5 years from now…you will still be on this planet, doing something, somewhere. So respect the past, but…now… live for the moment.
