tippet preference & why

I did a search and didn’t find out what I wanted to know.

What tippet material do you prefer and why? I’m just curious. I can’t come up with a favorite, but I’ve been using Orvis Super Strong lately. I used to use Dai Rikki and was happy with it and don’t know why I switched.

Just wondering.

Doesn’t SA make the Orvis lines/leaders?

More times than not I use Frog Hair when fishing for trout in most waters. It is strong and supple.

It appears to be a subjective type of preference. I’m kind of surprised. I figured one brand would top the others.
Thanks

It’s not rocket science. Most companies can figure it out. So, lots of brands work well.

I use Orvis Super Strong and Orvis Mirage for my fluorocarbon. The mirage has a higher pound test than others and both come in a 40 meter spool which is 10 meters more than most.

You’re right, Gramps. It’s certainly not rocket science. LOL!
Thanks

Have you compared it with Seaguar?

Sea-guar and Varivas are awesome. Both are incredibly abrasion resistant, which is as important as anything when it comes to salmon/steelhead/large trout fishing.

I use a bunch of different brands: the two I mentioned above, plus Rio fluoroflex/fluoroflex plus and Orvis mirage. I rarely even use monofilament anymore…

Marty

I have lines/leaders broken into two areas.

Trout - Orvis Super Strong Leaders with their Mirage Flouro Tippet added on.

Warm Water - Hand tied leaders using umqua leader material with Orvis Super Strong Tippet

i must be wierd.
i like rio powerflex and flouroflex.
tests well.low memory. strong.
what more can i ask for?

sounds like i need to try this seagaur! alot of people are praising it and i think its time i buy about 3 spools of it to try it out!
haha.

You’re not weird. Read the thread that was posted and see what I like.

Ok, we’re both weird.

I guess this is appropriate to ask in this thread…

Are the specs comparable brand to brand? I’ll bet the companies each use their own standards and methods…

E.G. when brand x says their 3x rates at 7#…and brand y says their 3x is 6#…is brand x really stronger…

I know Maxima used to be notorious for under rating their product…cost me a couple of steelhead…

i dont think they are. :? it really bugs me sometimes when someones 6x is 3.3 pound test. then someone elses is 2.5.

do you mean over rating? because if it was under rating that would mean it was stronger than what they said. right?

You are right flyandtie…and they were under rating so people would think their x was way stronger than the competitors

e.g. I asked a guide what # test they were using before a trip…he said 10#…so I went out and got some 10#…I think it was Dia Riki…new one on the market…well I should have remembered this guide always used Maxima…because when I got there I lost a couple of steelhead before we realized I would have had to get 15# Dia Riki to match Maxima’s 10#…seems weird but I fond out they often did that…

“Boy that Maxima’s great their 10# is as good as other’s 15#!” I can hear it now:twisted:

I have used most every brand of tippet available and find no difference. They are all fine. I have yet to find a “bad” tippet from anyone.

ive had the problemm with them where i was using there 2lb for tricky trout in the local lake with my three weight. my buddy was kickin my butt! with the same fly!. then i remembered there testing crap. and switched to rio 7x and startin kickin his butt!

Abrasion resistance, stretch, diameter/strength, cost per foot, color, features of spool, ‘Brand’, knot strength, over/under rating, these are just some of the variables. No way any can be considered the best. Best for what? Fresh? Salt? Sink rate?

I use Cabela’s house brand…because of price.
