Why do you see the need for rings?
Brad
This might explain why…

I have been using them for a number of years and will not be changing back to wasting my leaders. I go with the round ones from Climax:

I like the idea of just tying a cinch knot rather than doing the loop knot then conecting.
There are two things I will not use…
Clinch knot…not even the improved…
and TMC 200 hook
How do you possibly get along without them ??
The regular clinch knot is the only one I use for attaching tippets to furled leader tip rings and for tying flies to the tippet.
The TMC 200 hook is not one that I have in my inventory, so we probably are in agreement on that one, Phil.

Brandon -
Your mention of oval shaped tip rings is the first I’ve heard of such a thing, except for the tip rings which I started out using - links from a silver chain necklace which were not exactly round and not exactly oval.
Those were about the cheapest tip rings you could find, something like 80 rings / links for $10. The $10 necklace had 160 links and you had to sacrifice half of them to use the individual links. They were a bit on the “rough” side as to basic shape - more rectangular with rounded corners, and the silver itself was not finished into a fine round wire. But they worked - used a regular clinch knot to tie on the tippet, and never lost a fish over a knot failure, although I did lose more flies and tippet from failure of the tippet due to the roughness of the links when trying to pull hooks off of branches, and rocks, and other stuff.
I can’t see any particular disadvantage to oval vs round tip rings, given an appropriate size for the leader you are making.
John
John,
I have never used a tip ring and have fished furled leaders for four years, but am very excited to put some on my leaders. My friends have actually asked me about them, and requested them as well. I have made a few for my father in law and then showed him what a tip ring looks like and he cant wait to get one, as he would prefer to just tie the clinch knot. The oval rings I have found are either 2x3mm up to 3x5mm. I will add a picture of t orhem in this post. I can’t really see an advantage or disadvantage yet so I ordered some of both and will see what the difference is I guess.
Brandon
The 2x3mm ought to do the trick for all around use. The 3x5mm might be a bit big for dry fly fishing, but okay for nymphing.
If you don’t mind - what’s the source, and what is the price for the 2x3mm ??
John
Very well John…

On a lighter note. Kaboom1 does not like Tippet Rings but I do! Yet you will find us standing side by side at several Fly Fishing Shows touting the advantages of the Furled Leader. The next one will be the Trout Fest in Townsend, TN. It’s all about fly fishing, that’s all!
Okay, I’ll bite, what don’t you like about the TMC 200? Just curious. I have a few, but not many left. And…what knot do you use in place of a clinch knot?
Bruce
Too many missed hookups with that hook…makes some flies look better though…so I think it appeals to the fisherman.
Trilene knot if I want something like the clinch but mostly use the non slip mono loop knot ala Lefty.
Of course your mileage may vary but I’m not alone in those observations…however …if John Scott makes the clinch work pay attention …he’s a fishing machine:cool::mrgreen:
100% agree with the triline knot and the open loop or slip knot. The triline knot is as strong as the palamar without having to make a big loop. Works great last long time.
