Tinsel attachment?

I just tied up some Red & White Streamer flies. No real pattern, just sort of a Mickey Finn but with white instead of yellow. I was looking on the web and found a picture of a fly that raises a question. The picture is at this link.

Now here’s the question. If you look at the rear of the fly, the tinsel is on the hook shank with what appears to be no thread. How did he/she do that? Is there an adhesive backed tinsel? It sure makes the body slim, which I try to do.

Any ideas?

I feel closer to HIM when I’m fishing.

Bud… you could tie off the tinsel at the front, run it straight back on the hook shaft without winding… wrap some thread over that to keep it in place… return thread to eye. then wrap the tinsel back up toward the eye and tie off there. Just one way.

Tinsel was most likely tied in at the head of the fly wrapped back and then forward again. Use a smaller gauge tinsel, it will be more time consuming but may give you the effect your after.

Hi Clint,

You could do as Diane suggested or tie the tinsel on at the front, wrap it to the back, and then forward again over itself. I tie tinsel bodies this way most of the time. When I do so I usually put some head cement on the hook shank before wrapping the tinsel. Take care & …

Super glue works wonders for stuff like that if you want to conserve materials and aviid build-ups. It sticks very well to tinsel.

Use fine thread and just wrap forward. No problemo.

what ever you choose to do coat it with some cement. Makes it last a hell of alot longer and will not discolor.
