For no particular reason at all (tyers don’t need reasons do we? :)) I am going to tie up some #10-12 Calcasieu Pigboats to try to cast on my smallest rods.
I have some itty bitty rubber leggish material, its really more like hair its so small and will dub on the body in lieu of chenille. Tiny hackle may be used on the body.
So have any of you intrepid tyers assayed to tie bitty pigboats? How small have you gotten?
I’ve tied Pigboats before, but have never gone tiny as you are thinking of doing. I believe the small pattern would work though on many fish. Where did you get the micro rubber at though?

No hijack, good point. Guess I’ll see what I can work out.
Hey Mark Let me find out if I can even tie any tinies that I happy with…then I’ll talk [url=http://www.gunblast.com/Paco.htm:fe3f2]Nasti-Noses[/url:fe3f2] with you Don’t want to get into a swap unless I feel like I have something worthwhile to trade.
I tye a fly very much like a Pigboat but I use a brass bead head and I tye it with silicone strands and a short
Zonker hair tail—These flies are tyied on 8 down to 12 size hooks and they are deadly on bluegill,
redbreast, shellcracker and spotted bass. The fly is tied to more or less to imitate a spider jig commonly used in bait casting.
I tied a bunch of Pig Boats in size #8 & #12 a couple of years ago for a fly swap. They are deadly on bream. There are some tricks that will make life easier when tying these little guys. The biggest problem may be to find the right rubber hackle.
I have some tying instructions and some measurements all typed up, that I sent off with the fly swap. I will be glad to fax it to you if you will send me a fax #. Or, better yet, I think I may have several of these guys lying around somewhere, I can mail you the paper work and a few fly samples if you are interested. I am just next door to you, in Louisiana.
I have not tied any of these, or anything else for that matter in a couple of years. Been too busy to do much tying or fishing. Definately need to do something about that!!
Robin,
You maybe know that you can also buy those wide strips of black rubber legs in a micro size, suitable for panfish flies, right? They’d be fairly inexpensive.
I got your fax, thank you! The fax machine at work ate part of it but I got enough to see the Warm Water Fly Fisher website and was able to navigate to it. Thank you very much!
I had the honor of hearing Tom Nixon speak at a Dallas Fly Fishers meeting several years ago, not too long before he passed away. What a delightful soul!
I have caught loads of bluegills ,redbreast, redears, and spotted bass on the above jig flies especially in the pumpkin and yellow tail version. Here is anoth good fly I tie in 12,10,and 8s.I call it mr ugly and it looks a little more like a pigboat but is tied with peacock herl
instead of rubber or silicon strands.see the following url http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/002769.jpg
I am sorry but Mr Ugly uses emus feathers radiating around the head instead of peacock herl—sorry about that.By the way the picture was taken after I had returned from West Point Lk.after a day using it successfully on spots
