EdD finally caught a break and we joined forces to assult the Duck River below Cortner Mill yesterday. While I stayed close to my “Honey Hole” Ed explored down river several hundred yards. He caught several trout, blue gills and crappie using a dry with a dropper. I ended up with 12 trout using a WOW.
Hooray!! Ed really needed to get out!! I wouldn’t say he was grumpy, but …
Looks and sounds like you had a great day! River looks like even I could cast there.
Best,
JohnR
back at you, darlin’
Ed
I caught my first pair of fish, a rainbow and a creek chub (!) on a softhackle WOW that Jack had tied and given to me. Then I saw Pale Evening Duns start a slow, sporatic hatch. I wanted to try for 'gills as well as for trout. I tied on a size 10 parachute of my own concoction and added a size 18 (I think) sulpher dry as a dropper. The color match on the sulpher wasn’t perfect, but it was the best thing that I had in the box. The trout were clearly taking something from below the surface so I ginked the size 10 but not the sulpher. This plan worked for the rest of the day. The 'gills stayed focused on the big parachute. The trout focused on the smaller, saturated dry. A crappie a bit over 9" long went for the parachute as well. That is the first one that I have caught on a dry since college when we caught them on black ants in Clear Creek, a very badly named piece of water.
I had a great time and I look forward to getting back out on the Duck ASAP. I’m looking at Monday. I can’t rule out Saturday…
Jack did not stomp/kick/wrangle any trout. However there was the issue of that REAL cute little blonde that was sitting on the rock just in front of where he was casting. Jack put on some kind of show with his fancy casting. He slicked down his hair and made himself look his very best. It was only later that I realized just how smart Jack is. He had spread Gink all over his hair, in case he “got in over his head”. The blonde certainly looked like she might be that.
I, on the other hand, displayed my native poise and charm. Wading back upstream, right in front of the lovely lass, I wasn’t paying attention to my wading and caught my ankle in a jumble of branches. This resulting in my suddenly be seating in the river, right in front of 5 spectators. I am NOT my Mother’s gift to style, grace, and co-ordination… <sigh>
I hope that y’all can get out on, or even in, the water.
Ed, who was all wet
should drag Warren out with you. last report I got from Warren the water was high. Now Im thinking he was just trying to keep out of his honey hole. LOL only kidding. We stopped in at Lynchburg at Tims flies and lies and headed up to the Elk to wrestle a few stockers.
Jack, Ed
Sounds like a good day. I need to get back down there myself.
Sounds like you boyz had a wonderful time. I am currently reading in the Fly Fisherman about Tennessee’s top tailwater, the South Holston. Sounds like a great place for dry-fly fishing.
I’m totally missing out on this…
Glad you guys had a good day on the Duck!
Ed;
I did not want to bring up your rather wet “trip” but glad you did! As to the cute blond. I was casting to the fish and did not notice a “Cute Blond” (other than myself!).
Ron;
That was the same spot you and I pulled about 30 out of the last time you were down here.
Tyrone;
Come on over and we’ll give it a try!
Wade;
The water is actually a little low and slow!
Joe;
Hop on that motorcycle and get on over!
I’m toast for this Monday as I have training all day. I have a legit hope of a VERY short Friday workday (05:00 - 09:00). With luck, I’ll be able to hit the Duck (Dunk?) about noon. But I can’t put that in writing…
Ed
Ed;
Let me know and we’ll meet up at Dement Bridge. Wade downstream where the bank fishers can’t get to.
“Wade downstream”
Man some how I’m always upstream or downstream. I’m never where the activity is…:lol::rolleyes:
