Thanks so much for sharing that video. It gave me goose bumps watching that piece of the old west. I almost expected to see a band of Pawnee or Blackfoot come riding in from one side and cut five or six buffalo from the herd. Thanks again for sharing. 8T

That was cheating! Herding buffs with pickup trucks. And they dare to call themselves cowboys?!? What about the honor of the old west? Is nothing sacred anymore?
I did like the part where the six horse riders were trying to herd the dually pickup, though.
<grumble> Herding buffalo with pickups! Humph! </grumble>
Betty, In July we went to Mt Rushmore. When we left we went through Custer State Park on our way out to Custer, SD. About 5 miles into the park we came to about a 30 minute standstill as we had to wait for about 50 bulls, cows and calves as they meandered from one side of the road to the other. We were in some switchbacks and it seemed like every time we would start going we would run into another bunch going across the road. Finally we came out on top of a hill where the rest if the herd were. They are truly awesome and magnificent critters. My 18 year old grandson was real impressed with the mother nature show. That sound reminded me of the night the bison stampeded through my campsite at Soda Butte. (three nights before the grizzly came). Try to imagine those things running at full speed, you’re in a one man tent right in the middle of them. The sound of thundering hooves, feeling the ground shake with panicked hooves all around you , branches breaking, dirt flying and snorting all around you. The only thing keeping them from running over you is a tree and you’re praying you can make your self small enough to fit the small space it’s created.
…yeah, it was an exciting summer.
Betty that was “KEWL”. I can only imagine it sounded like the nascar race Sunday at the Speedway, but just a little kewler.
Being from the east, this may sound like a stupid question, but why were they “rounding up” the buffaloes?

The bufs are rounded up each winter, so the can be fed over the winter. They’ll give inoculations to all of 'em, parse out some of the cows and bulls, and sell them to ranchers all cross the west, and some will become steaks and burgers for the State Park. They have HUGE holding pens for them to stay in for the winter. They are a very managed commodity.
Next year when Brad and I drive out to the Idaho Vish-In we’ll be passing through the Black Hills on our way home at that time of year. Hmmmmmmmmmmm!!
Yep…may have to stop and see the buffs since there are no trouts in that part of the country…I’ll pack the 40-65

Can the animals not survive the winter on their own? I’m not sure I understand why they round all them up and feed them the winter, unless they could not survive.

You’re right on the button REE. 45-70 is the ticket. If I had my 'druthers that would be the next rifle I’d own, the Sharps from Shiloh. But $3500 is a lot for a gun.
I suppose the folks who hunt with it are now calling Quigley Down Under “The Movie.”
