Imagine that you are invited to flyfish for trout, but the place is a secret for you and you must choose just three dries and three nymphs for the case. What’s your “blind” selection?
Adams, Foam Beetle, Stimie
PT, Scud, Woolly Bugger
(and a scissors and small selection of Sharpies)
Same as above, but substitute a EHC for the beetle and a Prince nymph for the scud.
Parachute Adams, Griffith’s Gnat, Renegade
Flashback beadhead Pheasant Tail, Woolly Bugger (black or green or brown), Beadhead Hare’s Ear
Those are my favorite go to flies for search patterns on waters I have never fished.
Larry —sagefisher—
Parachute BWO, Elk Hair Caddis, Beetle. (Beetle if it’s warm enough. Tiny midge dry, if it’s not.)
Wooly bugger, flashback beadhead Pheasant Tail, Zebra type midge.
These are the flies that I have the most success with in unknown, inconsistent streams.
Adams, BWO, Humpy
Pheasant tail, copper john, zebra midge
Parachute Adams, Flying Ant, Elk Hair Caddis
Copper John, Bead Head Soft Hackle, Hairs Ear Nymph.
EH Caddis, Adams, Mosquito
PT nymph, AP turkey tail, breadcrust nymph.
Depends on the time of year.
Does time matter on a blind pick, Juan is in Argentina approaching the end of Summer, I am in Georgia (hopefully) approaching the end of Winter.
Dries - Parachute adams, Parachute BWO, Griffith Gnat:
Wet Gold ribbed peaccock body soft hackle with a clear glass bead, Copper John, Wooly Bugger (Black, Brown or Olive)
Thanks Uncle, yes, my question was to have an approach -if possible- to a global trout cast, river or lake, summer or fall…etc.
At the end of the long line, after books, videos, shows, millions of discussions, the well-known Adams, EHC, BWO, WB, PT, etc. are always our favorites. All the rest is just for fun, creation, experimentation. Which is the great thing of our sport!
Thanks guys!
My choice would be;
Dry; CDC and elk (black) , PMD, Griffiths Gnat.
Wet; WB in olive, partridge and orange and a pheasant tail s/h
Dry: Adams, Elk Hair, Cricket.
Wet: Woolybugger, my own bait fish imitation, Copper John.
This is easy (I am assuming we are going trout fishing, right?).
Dry: Chernobyl Ant, Black Popper, McPhail Foam Mayfly
Wet: Woolly Bugger, Pheasant Tail, Clouser Minnow
I picked these because if the trout are not cooperative, I can still nail some bass, and sunfish. With these flies, if there is any fish at all in the water, I will catch it. Or turtles, snakes, frogs, etc… Something will bite these patterns. I don’t come home empty-handed (unless I choose to turn them all loose…).
Dry: Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Hare’s Ear, Ausable Wulff
Nymph: Beadhead GRHE, Beadhead Zug Bug, Pheasant Tail
I don’t consider the wooly bugger a nymph or it would be on the list. I always try to have some ants (both wet and dry) and beetles too.
