I was curious to see what type of thread everyone is using to tie foam pattern or any other pattern that requires a nice strong thread. I have a spool of Kevlar, but some of the uni-thread is the same price for twice as much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Believe it or not, Coats Machine Embroidery polyester thread. Basically sewing thread. Most of the foam flies I tie are not real small ones. Size 12 is about as small as I go so I don’t need to use fine tying thread and save that for very small flies.
I use just about any thread that’s available as long as it’s 6/0 or stronger. I would avoid Kevlar threads because of their tendency to cut material, including your fingers if you try to break it with your bare hands. 8T
I’ve never found that you’d need ‘stronger’ thread for foam flies than you’d need for similar sized feather and fur flies.
For smaller ones, I use 6/0 thread or (just 'cause I’m cheap) ‘clear nylon’ sewing thread size .004. For larger ones, 3/0 thread or .005 clear nylon sewing thread…
Kevlar is for deer hair or flaring round rubber…that’s all I can find that ‘needs’ that kind of power.
I like 3/0 flat thread like Gudebrod or Danville because I feel the fatter wider stuff doesn’t cut foam as easily. I can wrap tightly with great strength and no cutting!
For small beetles, spiders, etc, it’s 6/0…usually Uni & 3/0 Uni for gurglers & other larger stuff. Main reason I use Uni is…it’s what I have the most of.

Tied a few tonight with the boys at our monday night tying—Just used what I had handy 3/0 . Dont use Kevlar–thats a waste of good Deer Hair tying thread. BILL
