Thompson's Water Seal

Sounds like a snipe hunt to me.

RW here,

Excuse me…not trying to be a smarta$$ or anything, but why do folks seem to go out of their way to use something that “wasn’t” made for fly tying “for” fly tying, when there are products made specifically “for” fly tying on the market right in the fly shops? Same question for fly lines.

If you use what is purposely made for flies and lines you wouldn’t have that little “itch you can’t scratch” always bugging you about whether you should have used these other products in the first place.

Just count me curious,

The reason I tried the Thompson’s Water Seal was because I’d heard about it and was told that it worked better and lasted longer than Water Shed or Hydrostop, which I have found don’t last very long at all. When I am able to fish for trout I like to fish the small mountain streams that are very seldom slow moving, so trying to find a better “permanent” floatant applied at the tying bench is my purpose.

Joe, RW again,

That answer is not pertinent to my post. Which simply meant, if folks used what was supposed to be used on their flies by companies that made it for flies (and lines) they wouldn’t have to go around worrying whether it is gonna ruin their flies, change the colors, or how long it takes to dry.

If all anybody used was catgut, silk, and grass for rods…
Well, I think you can get the point.

Hey JC,
In no way are we trying to be arguementive, but where or when was the “zenith”? Could that not be somewhat related to one’s own opinion? Like other things FF’ing? Bobbers, dry fly upstream only, only natural materials, and the list goes on…
What if the zenith for sounders was considered a string and a rock…no color sounders?
What if navigation was still at a “map” and a compass? How many of us realize the convenience (need?) of handheld GPS with a map and route on it?
It would be danged interesting to challenge the species that have become available to us with a bamboo rod, silk line and Medalist reel. But I have no desire to have to dry a line after each 1/2 day of hard use and perform the necessary care required of such gear. We are REAL lazy, ya know.
Oh yeah! What about boats with wooden motors, instead of gas motors?

Hey lee, what’s your point?
and what the heck are you talking about?

Some years ago, I heard that ScotchGard was just great as a dry fly treatment. Just spray your flies , let em’ dry and use them at will. If you used a floatant like Gink, it would work even better.

So I tied up about 10 dozen flies, mostly dries, for an upcoming trip, stuck them in a chunk of styrofoam as I finished each one. I sprayed the whole bunch of them well, went upstairs for supper, and when I came back, I found a pool of styrofoam and ruined flies. The chemicals in Scotchgard will melt the styrofoam which will then resolidify as the chemicals evaporate. I found my flies cast in styrofoam.

So, as someone mentioned, I now use stuff that is made for the purpose. ScotchGard is for other purposes. I don’t stick my flies in styrofoam any more either.

So…I guess we’re through discussing the topic?

If it worked for Al…and Mr EagleElk…Then it must flat out work…the Rain X that is not the Deck Sealer…used that for sealing a deck…and Knew that were’nt good for Flies…

Oh and Mr Castwell,Ty for showing me a hella great looking Fly bTW or perhaps style of Tye,Guess ya also just sold me on my need of the magic tool as well…that’ll make the wife to be just as pleased as peach with the both of us!!!..lol

Ummmm, Bill?

My friends, and that includes all the fine folks here at FAOL, call me Ron or REE, not Mr. Eagle Elk. I used to wear a tie once upon a time, since then I’ve become very informal.

REE

Point taken ,Ron…Kinda like Mr.Knepp He passed in 91…and other points are taken as well,on the “watershed”,I too have found that on Flies it does not appear quite so long lasting,as did in that afore mentioned shop, thought I was useing to much thread or something and getting my Flies a bit to dence or something glad to hear others have the same thoughts as I…

Bill,
If you and I could just come up with some patterns that are made up of toilet paper, I believe that Watershed would be the perfect benchside applied floatant!
Joe

Well Joe,
If it were’nt for the sheer aspect of it disolveing in water…lol…I’d have already been there and done that…lol…Maybe I’ll just have to do as Ron,Al, and countless others have already done and go Buy me a big yellow plastic bottle …and I’ll bet Wally world has it too…Always a plus!!!

Wish’in ya’ll Great Fish’in,Bill
