Strolling down the first isle of tyers and booths at the international fly tying show near my home, I found myself unconsciously in “carnival mode”. Carnival mode is that place you go to mentally when walking past a line-up of folks hocking their wares and trying to sell you something, should you foolishly make eye contact with them. And while despite the fact that I know it won’t be that way at this particular event, I think it still kicks in for me in self-defense due to the crowds.
Hi Ralph, nicely written, and it made me appreciate the vise I tie on all the more too. My vise is an old Thompson A that I didn’t spend much on, but it serves its purpose quite nicely.
Just like you wrote, its comfortable to set down and tie on it.

Enjoyed the article. Started on a Thomson A. Used a Gordon Griffith vice for several years until I wore it out.
Now have a DanVise. Hope it outlasts me. Now hooks, materials, and such are another “vice”.

Exactly how I feel about my HMH Standard. Although I do have others that I tie with occassionally, my HMH is my old friend and it just feels right.
I appreciate the Regals since they has those “automatic transmission” jaws. That said, I probably will never own one. They look funy. I still have all three of my vises-a Tack-L-Tyer fron the 50s, Herter’s No. 9 around '70, and a new love Danvise 2009. Each one holds memories though the Danvise holds hooks best. With the Danvise comes the US distributors, Al and Gretchen Beatty who have been very helpful when I needed information. It has been a good experience discovering “true rotary” so far.
