Last year I went to Cabo with my brother, this year I’m thinking of taking a road trip to the Texas coast, probably somewhere around Padre Island. I was wondering if it would be worth our while, or should we head south of the border again? If it will be worth our while, what can we expect…species, conditions, etc.
Folks, I’ve talked to my brother about the trip and he won’t be able to go until April/May during his class break, so…how about some info on fishing in TX in April/May instead.
April can be a great month, but windy. If the weather cooperates, you can have great trout and red fishing in the bays. Others, black drum and sheepheads. There is also potential for some surf and near shore action. That is about the time the spanish and king mackerel and jacks start to show up, if the water temperature is up, maybe a tarpon, too.
Areas to target, Rockport, Aransas Pass / Port Aransas, Baffin Bay (Large Trout), Port Mansfield and South Padre Island. Of course you’ll have to put up with the spring breakers.
I’d go as far south as i could. In January, most of the fish have gone offshore to make more fish. Still, the bays might have some promise on warmer days when the fish will come into the shallows for a meal and some sun.
Matagorda might be OK on a warm day, as would Espiritu Santo, POC, Rockport, and even as far north as Christmas Bay.
I think one of the reasons that Matagorda is good is due to the mud. It warms up well and retains heat. So if you can find mud, maybe you’ll run into a gator trout willing to take your fly. Baffin should be good to amongst the shallow mud bays and rock. Just be careful with the rock though (actually they are fossilized remains).
Just maybe you’ll beat Bud Roland’s world record speckled trout caught on the fly that was 37" long and 15+ lbs caught in the lower laguna madre. The previous world record was caught in Baffin and was 13.7 lbs so maybe you’ll get lucky.
