Theakston's 'Old Peculiar'

This is the name of a well known premium beer in Yorkshire.
The name, Theakston, is all that the previous statement has, appart from Yorkshire, to do with this post.
There is available on the Archive site, a book called -
‘British Angling Flies’ by Michael Theakston.

It is a very interesting book with a lot of old patterns/recipes.

Nice book but an even better beer!

Hi,

I had a bottle of Old Peculiar a few weeks ago. Was very nice. I’ve been sampling a number of different beers during my stay. Now, I’m sampling this book as well. Thanks Donald, and Cheers!

P.S. Note how the terms were used differently; duns are stoneflies, spinners appear to be crane flies and midges, etc. I recall this being mentioned in Magee’s book covering the history of North Country flies. He mentions Theakston and Walbram, so this is a great find! Thanks again Donald.

Was this what Compo, Foggy, Sid, & Wesley drank. Do Cleggy, Truly, Howard, & Barry still drink it?

“I wonder if there are any fish in that stream.”

Ed,
Of course they did and still do.
The beer was named after them. LOL

Hmmm, that river did look very interesting.

Donald, I have purchased all three seasons that are available on US format DVD, 1977, 1978, & 1995. In fact, I’m thinking very seriously about getting a region-free DVD player and buying the rest of the seasons that are available on-line. They certainly beat almost anything else on TV.
