Note: My brother and I are in none of these pictures. But did I
mention I did catch a steelhead this year. Its true. I wouldn’t kid about something like this.
Merry Christmas

Glad to someone has the time to get out and fish. It seems like every time I can spare a few hours latel y it is or has just rained, and the river is to high and fast to fish (although it may be just my lack of experiance and knowledge.)
Happy hooking to all and Merry Christmas… Erich
Does anybody know by looking at the flow data at… http://waterdata.usgs.gov/oh/nwis/uv?04201500 for the Rocky River what levels are probably to high to spend my time heading out to try and fish? I know 800cfps is too high and 200cfps is ok, but where in the middle is the line? It seems like every time I note it after fishing the 200’s are ok but all the other times I seem to be available its 800 or higher and that is to high to wade and I could be wrong but 1000cfps is to fast to fish (anybody elses opinions are welcome as I could be wrong.)
Thanks … Erich
P.S. right now it is at 407 cfps so if I can sneak out I may head down at least to look, but hopefully to wet a line.
Erich,
The first graph you see when you go to the USGS site is the Discharge cubic feet per second. That is the speed of the river, how fast it’s flowing.
It is the second graph that shows the height or depth of the river.
In a way you need to look at both of the graphs to determine if the river is unfishable. I’ve fished it when it has been at 2.75 but it was on a down swing of the cfps. The other thing you need to take in to consideration is where on the river you are fishing. The USGS site is under the Cedar Point Rd. bridge, where the East and West branches of the river meet, most people fish well North of that.
In a way it is kind of a trial and error sort of approach. Check USGS and then go down and compare. If you don’t mind me asking, how far are you away from the Metroparks. If you feel more comfortable feel free to PM.

Well there it is for January 10, 2008.
I do not feel as optimistic as the author for the river returning to fishing levels any time in the next few days. If we do not get any more rain maybe by Sunday the 13th. you could wet a line.
The weather just has to hold on till the 19th. then I will be back in the saddle again.
Respectfully,
Sean

The river is perfect. Two more days and I’m on the river again.

Slush or not I’m going
And He’ll drag me kicking and screaming
of course away from the river.
Jim
Please check the update above in Sean’s latest posting. Doesn’t look good. Heading out to check how bad.

In Northern Ohio it rains…the river goes up…and on the weekend we fish. Well I’ve just made my almost daily treck down the hill and I have some very bad news.
The River is inches away from breaking over the majority of its reinforcing walls. At bends in the river that have not been reinforced the river is over its banks. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t be surprized to see parts of the Metroparks closed off to traffic due to the river overflowing.
Were expected to get 2 - 3 more inches of rain tonight. I don’t think the might Rocky can take any more.

For those of you that look forward to us updating the fishing report need only look at the pictures. As I suspected the River would soon spill over its banks. It is amazing to look at the force of nature and how far water will rise when it has nowhere to go. In the first couple of pictures what you don’t see is a wall to keep the river from erroding the road. The wall is a good 10 to 12 feet tall when the river is at its normal levels.
Sean and I usually fish near the bridge in the later photos. To give you a sence of water level…in the Summer I could walk under that bridge with my 9’ rod extended in my hand and not even come close to scratching the underside.

Water a little high? We have sure had a wet week here in Ohio.
Mike
To say the least the river is high. It was at the high water mark for some time, then it rained and hard.
Because the river has been up for some time it won’t take long for the river to become fishable. Finding
parking in under 3 feet of water will be a premium.
The up side, you can launch a boat on the baseball fields. The down side, you wont be able to recover
your boat till some time after St. Patrick’s Day on a lottery bassis at the normal launch and recovery
locations.

It’s darkest before the dawn.
How many freezings in a darkest and thaws in a dawn? I hope this is the last one of the year.
