the rascally tilapia

Every time I see a post from somebody in FL I just feel like I should quit my job and sell all my things and just move over there…
Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong but they just have some of the best darn (warmwater) fishing around here.
Those are some huge fish, the ones I’m catching are some tiny wee ones, I bet you those gave you a good fight.

I would have to agree with you, Martin. Florida has some amazing fishing for warmwater species. The size and variety is astounding.
While fishing with Bonefishwhisperer, we’d spot a largemouth bass…then a peacock bass, oscar, spotted tilapia, jaguar guapote, blue tilapia, mayan cichlid…then a bluegill…plecostomus everywhere…then couple of big snook would swim by…and a school of jacks would charge baitfish down along the shoreline. A ‘gator jumped off the bank about 30’ from me, iguanas were pretty common too. In short, you never knew what you’d see, but it was always exciting!

I REALLY wanna get back down there soon!

(I know I’ve posted these before…but who doesn’t like a bit of fish porn?)

13" Oscar

Small but aggressive Spotted Tilapia (male)

10" Mayan Cichlid

Peacock Bass

Been there twice but not on a fishing trip. The first time I was only interested in Disneyland and the second was kind of a business trip so not even close.
Wow, that is a lot of species for one body of water but that’s FL for you. Hopefully when the kids get a bit older I can go again on a fishing trip.
Thank you so much for sharing those great pix.

That looks a lot like what we call a 5 Bar General.
Aloha,
Stan

Hawaii…(sigh). Another one on my list.

Here’s a fly very similar to my BS Fly but in different colors. Sorry but no picture of one of mine but will try and get one on later. Hook sizes are about right but I use a straight eyed hook. Use a dark olive Estaz for the body, a large copper bead head, a bit of orange or yellow maribou fluff for the throat and a dark olive maribou wing and a short fan tail of the same. BS=Bluegill/Sunfish and I should have added Perch as the fly is an imitation of a very young panfish of these species although in actuality the colors are less pronounced.

It produced 7 species or so in it’s first outing at Clear Lake, Washington and several more since and it accounted for the IGFA all tackle World Record Blue Tilapia from Orlando.

Here’s another that good. I prefer it in natural colors, even an olive green.
