This an awesome video. Pity we don’t have mayflies in my corner of the universe.

awesome video. thanks

That was great! Its a cool experience any time you actually get to see something you’ve learned so much about, but rarely get a good close look at.

That’s from Ralph Cutter’s “Bugs of The Underworld” DVD. The entire DVD is great and can really change the way you look at things.

Normand—great video and very interesting site.

Thanks much for posting.

Very cool!

Great clip! Thanks for sharing.

Actually, Cloeon simile has been recorded from your Lake Myvatn.

I did not know that maybe they do actually exist here but they must be in very small numbers. The name of the lake however could be translated as Lake Midge or Midgelake, the vatn part in the name of M?vatn means lake or water. There are two main kinds of midges that hatch in the lake or around it. Chironomidae and the biting Simuliidae. Both can form great clouds by the lake during hatches and block up engine air filters. The Simuliidae are more commonly known as Black Fly as I understand it but the name that fits our black flies best is Buffalo Gnat because of the shape of the fly. People can get seriously injured if they are not well protected during a hatch of the buffalo gnats I have seen sheep run into a hut for cover during a hatch. I was fairly well protected but a few of them still got through my defenses they are so aggressive. I was totally covered with them and wish I had a photograph to prove it. I guess the photo would have been totally black because they would have covered the lens too.

Thanks Normand,
Nice video, and educational as well.
