Thanks for the Fish-In!

Thank you for the wonderful fish in.
I had almost forgot my manners.
To the organizers and to all those faolers that I met at the fish-in in Lowell.
This was my first fish-in and I had a blast.
I met some wonderful new friends and got to see central Idaho for the first time. The venue for the event is wonderful and the 3 rivers are beautiful beyond belief.
The thing that tied it all together, made it work to make it such an adventure for me was the hard work done by Denny Conrad, Les Young, Ron and Vicki Eagle Elk, and Jim and Deanna Birkholm organizers of the whole shebang. Thank you guys, what a trip.

I’m sorry I had to leave too soon and didn’t get to take part in all the events. I had to go home to finish painting my buffalo. (Ask Steve or DG )
I greatly enjoyed sitting under the shelter of a tree one evening, talking to Denny, Stan, Ron, Vicky and Les. Man the stuff they know!
On a different more boisterous night Z, Akidatheart, Dana and I lit two lanterns to check the caddis hatch. We noticed several orange caddis flying around the lights. The largest one landed in Z’s cocktail. kidatheart and I dammed near wet ourselves watching Steve tilt the ice filled cocktail glass sideways still drinking the booze more carefully now though so as not to waste any. His fingers stuck along the side of his face trying to capture the Caddis amid the ice cubes and pickled olives (3) all the while damming the opening with his tongue so none of the precious liquid would spill out and be lost. ( kind of reminded me of that commercial where the guy spills the nescafe on the carpet squeezes it out and drinks it.) Mission accomplished, booze saved, caddis captured. The errant bug was promptly bent over the rim of the glass with Steve yelling at it to Spit it out you little b@#t@rd Spit it out! The caddis having finally spit back Steve?s booze was set free upon the table where it crawled in drunken circles as the three of us convulsed in laughter. Dana arrived about this point and I am sure he thought we were nuts. The bug at this time promptly passed out dead drunk or just dead we knew not which.
Note to Steve: the saying what happens in Lowell stays in Lowell is incorrect they were talking about Vegas.
The last night I was there sitting with everyone at the campfire talking about painting buffalo (you had to be there ) when at about 11:00pm or so (I don’t carry a watch) Jim and Deanna showed up after a long tiring drive. Jim gave a short talk on the new exciting stuff happening on FAOL . Tired as they were JC & LF stayed up for about an hour talking to us and answering our questions until finally they just had to get some well deserved shut-eye and co-incidentally so did I.
I was invited by Joe and Linda (lowtecjoe) to partake of some Marvelous Cornish game hens, cooked over hot coals in a cast iron dutch oven. Folks I got to tell you, can that Joe ever cook up a heck of a meal. You have to see his lowtec rig for the fire. He heats lots of charcoal briquettes in a briquette chimney till they were red hot. He set a double layer on top of a dish shaped platform made from a plow disk. Neatest thing you ever saw. He placed a double layer of hot coals under the cast iron pot, banked some up the sides. He added some spices, cabbage, onions, potatoes and 1/2 a jug of ginger ale in with the hens before closing the pot. Then covered the lid with additional coals. Long before they were done the smell of those hens was incredible. I have never enjoyed a meal more. Thanks Joe and Linda for taking care of me.

To think I passed up two different fish-ins just because I didn?t know how I would fit in with people who cast like pros. I was worried because I cast like a mud fence. Finally I got up the courage to go to this one. My fears were beyond groundless. I was welcomed with open arms and with a friendship that is akin to family. No-one cared how good or bad I cast or anybody else for that matter. They, like me were just there to be with good friends and to go fishing. I mentioned the first day that my casting was not the best and Steve immediately offered me help if I wanted it. No pressure just ask. Thanks Steve maybe next time .
Thank you all so much for letting me be a part of this. To those of you who haven’t been to a fish-in I highly recommend it.
Roger Murray

wow,

Gnubee, Awesome report! Just one thing. You should have e-mailed it too JC and LF and had it put on readers cast. That way it would have been saved to archives. I really think we have a new writer in our midst.

 Roger,
You are very welcome. We are pleased to have met you.
Perhaps again soon…
God Bless,

Roger,Great post. I’m sorry I missed you at the fish in, I arrived Thursday morning. I too was nervous about attending, but I had a great time, got some help with my awful casting and My 15 year old son also had a great time.
Thanks again to everyone who put in so much effort to make the Fish-in happen and hopefully I can attend two Fish-Ins next year.

Eric

Hey Gnubee,

What a wonderful report. For a minute I was there
and enjoying the comaraderie you described so well.
Thanks for the peek through the looking glass.G
Warm regards, Jim

Eric-WD
Re being nervous about attending. I certainly was.
I’m sure we aren’t the the only ones that are a little nervous about going to a fish-in. Heck Some of these folks are great casters and fishers. Attending for the first time can be a little intimidating but really shouldn’t be. As you and I now know. From the moment you arrive you are greeted warmly. There is no pressure to perform whatsoever , indeed if you never cast in front of anyone during the entire event probably no-one will notice either way. If you indicate that you could use some help casting, fly tying, fishing or just drinking beer or anything else someone will be there to help. ( especially the beer drinking part ) .
I’m sorry I missed seeing you and your son.
Besides thanking the people who made it all possible I hope my post will encourage people to attend a fish-in in the future. There’s no pressure just fun.

GnuBee,
I agree with Clyde! you should e-mail this to JC and LF. I really enjoy your writing.
I’m glad you conquered your fear, and came to the fish in, we really enjoyed having you there. And we are looking forward to spending time with you at future fish ins!
VEE

Hi Vee my writing is sort of like my going or not going to the fish-in . I was a little reluctant to submit anything, never having done it before. But don’t worry I have sent a couple of my musings to the publishers for consideration. If JC or LF liked my post enough they can just cut and paste it into whatever spot they wish. I enjoyed very much meeting You and Ron and watching you guys thrash the waters of the Selway to a foam haha and wow can’t Ron tie flies. awesome! I keep missing Ron in the Chat room cause I am not very organised.- ( Forgetfull as hell is closer to the truth here ).

Pardon me if this gets a little bit long, but now that I have had time to reflect on the events, I would feel if I was wrong for not saying what I have to say. So I will say thank you to everyone who was there…you guys and gals are the greatest.

Roger… You have said what is most important about Fish-In’s: it is the people and the fun times that make these events so great to attend. I will admit to being nervous at my first ID Fish-In (2004). I know that I felt that I was the worst person at casting before I met anyone there…and I was probably right, but at no time did anyone hold that against me. By the way, the whole conversation about painting buffalo was absolutely hysterical.

Eric: It was cool to meet you (and James as well) after having chatted a few times in the chat room. I look forward to seeing you again next year hopefully.

I have met some great people through Fish-In’s and will always cherish the memories which are too many to mention (and some probably should stay that way ROFL). Maybe the most meaningful was the first day on of 2004 where I knew absolutely nobody but the people that I meet on that first day made me feel welcome…special thanx to Z, AKidAtHeart, Slic, MontanaMoose and a couple of others who I am drawing a brain cramp on now for making me feel like I was at home during my first Fish-In on my frist day).

I know that my mom, Rosemary, also had a great time despite the fact she doesnt fish. She enjoyed meeting everyone…with special thanks to VEE and Linda. I also know that Everett (my father) had a great time and really enjoyed meeting some new friends as well. I have heard a lot of postive things from some great people who were there about both my parents and to me that really means a lot (even you DG for saying they even seemed normal and having brought up a rebel like me…ROFLM**O). Special thanks to Z and Dana for the long talks we had about how great it was to bring Everett to Lowell to fish. It was really great to talk to both of them about all of my father’s health issues (I wont go into details here since that is another lengthy post in its own right) and make me feel so proud of his enjoyment of the whole experience. I know there are others who were present also felt the same way as Dana and Z, but these two really stand out. REE and VEE…I will make sure that I pass on a big hello from both of you to my parents. Next year we will have to get together in Lowell and hopefully spend some time fishing

While posting on this thread I would like to put in a very special thanks to JC and LF for putting up with my absolutely horrible casting the past two years LOL. In all seriousness though, I think I finally figured out how to cast better after this year. LF showed me how to DH last year (though I never practiced any and failed badly when trying it on the river), but it wasnt until the last Saturday while casting the Sage XP that JC sold me that I finally figured things out. I knew what I needed to do, but it just didnt seem to go together. While casting the XP on the Lochsa on the way back home, it all of a sudden came together. I just feel kind of silly in that it took me a whole year and a new rod to put 2 + 2 together. Thank you Jim and Deanna

While mentioning rods, thank you so very much for the rod REE. I really enjoy fishing with it and look forward to lots of fun with it. I know I said I can never thank you enough, and that is so very true. I think it is only fair to say thank you where many people can see it so they can realize just how great of a person you are to not only me, but many others on FAOL as well.

I am already getting motivated for next year. I cant wait to see old friends and make some new ones.

blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda

Sorry if I went off on a rather lengthy tangent, but I finally like it was right to say what I felt.

Thanks to everyone that attended our 2006 Idaho FI.
Mark it in stone:
Sept 23, Sept 29. 2007 = Idaho FI.2007
I am accepting sign ups by e-mail already for the “I’m going list”. I will give it to LF as soon as she gets the new page up on line.

Les, REE, Vee and myself are alredy working on next years gathering.
Three Rivers Resort is a family owned and opperated business. They go out ot their way to help us have fun.
Little things like graciously moving busses from our “distance casting spot” had to charge batterys, etc.
They have us blocked in for our week already for next time. Big THANK YOU to them.
We will be having more for the ladies to do next year.
Eleven ladies attended this year and I anticipate more next year.

Wait until you see VEE’s report and photos, soon to be published here on FAOL.
Not only did we have fun, we all caught fish!

Denny

Denny,

I considered not attending next year, but VEE swore she wouldn’t make me any more Orange Cookies if we didn’t go.

After that threat I weighed my options, fishing beautiful water with eager Cutthroat in a gorgeous setting, all the while eating Orange Cookies, or staying home without Orange Cookies. Man, it was a no brainer, put us down for the I’ll be there list. We may even get there a few days early and stay a few days later in 2007.

Tying flies for next year already.

REE

OK, Of course both VEE & REE are on the “I’m going list”

Have an idea
Talking about the famous VEE Orange cookies.
How about anyone that wants to, bring a batch or double batch of cookies to share.

Not mandatory, but might be fun to add.

Denny = Rookie Cookies, double batch.

Anyone else?

Denny

If we could convince Ohiotuber to join us, we might have some of his famous peanutbutter fudge! The good Lord willing JC and I will be there too.

 Denny,
Sign Linda and I up for next year. This time we won’t bring the dogs, and we’ll be renting one of the cabins. I think we have already started saving up for one. Let’s see, I think I only have to take the garbage out 49 more times before we hit the road. I’ll probably be doing Dutch Oven Cornish Game Hens again next year. Gnu Bee, you can do desert. OK?
God Bless,

Denny I was thinking of bringing a double batch of Madeleins but remembered they won’t let homemade foodstuffs across the border.

Joe I will travel 1100 kilometers for your cornish game hens anytime. So I guess I have to come now and Its all your fault.
When I get there I will make you a killer corn chowder that will knock your socks off. I was going to make it the day I left Lowell.
I’m planing to rent the same room as I did this year.

Was going to combine the fish-in with a Turkey hunt but I checked the Idaho non-res hunting regs. It’s $90.00 bux for the license and another $67.50 for each Turkey permit. At $157.50 it’s a little pricy for a 10 pound Turkey. So its just the fish-in. lol.
Unless of course someone wants to give me $157.50 for a large bag of quality turkey feathers.

Ps. The Corn Chowder recipe is in this weeks What’s cooking forum check it out.

I would like to especially thank Denny for his overly generous prize for the winner of the accuracy contest. While that winner was me, I’m not trying to boast about it, but he gave me a complete red golden pheasant skin for winning. It is magnificant, a mature bird with the tail attached. Thanks Denny. I know I told you I was going to display it for a while and enjoy it’s aesthetic properties but I decided to tie up a bunch of General Practitioners with it. Still trying to locate some of the materials that I need to tie it in it’s origonal dressing.

O.K. Denny and Ron,
I’ll do the orange cookies
Can’t wait for next year! Also I think I have everyones pic’s from the fish in now so I will get them to LF
